Title: Once Again - Insurance in Ontario
Post by: woodcreekpete on May 01, 2021, 04:30:07 PM
Woodcreek has decided to return to the streets. It's been almost 3 years. I couldn't believe my ears when my wife, the OR nurse who has picked far too much gravel out of downed rider's faces, suggested that I should get the latest FJ insured. Possibly, she has an ulterior motive.
I got a couple of quotes, TD and Riders Plus, $135 and around $115 per month. I'm guessing the cretins are talking 12 month, non-refundable. Predatory assholes, the bunch of them.
Anybody able to find a policy here that is remotely reasonable?

I guess they forgot to tell you... if you haven't been insured on a motorcycle for over a year in Ontario, (I'm assuming) you are treated as a new rider once you get back on the road.  You are getting quotes as if you were a 17yr old squid on a 1200cc sportbike.  It's a good racket if you can get in on it.

Drop all collision and comprehensive....toys are just toys.  Check out antique insurance.  I don't know how it works in the great white north but minimize or even drop any medical if covered by work or other personal insurance.  All you really want to do is protect others (and of course yourself from lawsuits).

The liability part of the insurance soaks up the majority of the fees.  You can drop the collision/fire/theft but the effect is minimal. Plus you must insure for 12 months (there used to be 6mo policies but they disappeared a long time ago).  There are some classic bike insurers, but they need to be at least 25-30yrs old, appraisals every 2yrs, plus restrictions on how often you can ride them.  Some even restrict you to only recognized club rallies/parades/special events.

Since many of us ride the FJs regularly we wouldn't qualify.  Unless if you have several classic bikes then maybe you could split up the mileage between them.... hmmmmm.... that gives me an idea....  buy more FJs!!!!   :good2:

Ontario is one of the worst places on the continent for insurance.  I'll stop there before I start frothing at the mouth.

Nope, I have ranted about this many times. I get upset with it cause we pay pretty much one of the highest motorcycle ins in the world. Alberta last I checked was around 325 dollars for the season but good old corperate whipping boy of Canada, Ontario has to bend the knee.

I'm with TD.
I haven't put the FJ on my policy yet but for my wife's 2019 ryker and my 82 wing it cost me $1030. They take a monthly payment out from jan to jul.
