Just brought home this 86.
My first Yamaha.
Fairly new to riding (4 years) and my first bike was a 76 goldwing. Since then I added a 78 project wing and an 82 standard which was my daily ride bike. I have a thing for the vintage bikes. :pardon:
Then I saw this online a few weeks ago.
I was never attracted to sport bikes but IMHO this thing is a work of art. Love the look of it.
I haven't rode it yet. Going to do an oil change, check the brakes, replace the back tire (it's weather checked).
The guy I bought it from has known the bike since it was brand new. A friend of his bought it, sold it later to another friend who in turn sold it to him.
It's missing a couple of things I'll be looking to replace (the black plastic covers" on the lower back part of the fairing.

Welcome NGFC, 86' is my first FJ and the best looking colors as well.
Welcome to the Forum :hi:
Great find, your FJ looks amazing.
Fred
Welcome aboard :hi: I think, as many here do, that Yamaha nailed the design with the FJ's.
FYI our forum sponsor, RPM (banner at top of the page) has those fairing trim pieces you are missing.
Left side: (need two)

Right side: (need two)..the right side protectors are very very scarce....RPM is the only source I know

Hope this helps.

Your first ride may ruin the gold wing for you forever.
Do you mean the bumpers on the scoops? They are available at RPM, the banner at the top of the forum page. They are our site sponsor. I was just copying links but Pat beat me to it.
Also if you are into the 3D printing thing here is another option:

Edit: he only has the protectors designed for the later years.
thanks folks. I will be picking your brains no doubt. She needs a bit of tlc and it's my first inline engine.
Tks for the links for the bumpers as well.
Good looking bike. Ride safe, and welcome!
Ted
G'day and Welcome 5speed,
You do have the best colour combo there :good:
Looks like you've got a good setup behind, just ideal for those vintage restos
Enjoy your Modern bike

Tks Sparky. this is what is in the other side of the garage. lol
I built a 14 x 14 piece on my shed for my bike tinkering place. I just have to finish a few things then the bikes will be going out there when they need some attention
Welcome from a fellow 86 owner and Canuck. Mike from Ottawa
Great find on the 86. :good: You will most definitely enjoy her.
Cheers...Jake
thanks guys. Still waiting for the back tire to come in.
I have a replacement rear signal light lens on it's way. One is cracked. Also have a replacement seat cover coming as there is a hole in the original one.
The fairing bumpers are next on the list and the only other thing it needs cosmetically.
If you need left side fairing 'bumpers', I've got a pair you can have for the cost of shipping from Perth, On.

Ok, now I know where the mystery FJ parts manufacturing plant is located. Pete must have a warehouse of old FJs.
Sadly, my simian friend, the shelves are pretty near bare here in woodcreekworld.
So where in this vast expanse are you located? Plenty of us FJ owners scattered around. That's a nice bead blaster you got there. I also like your warning sign on the cabinet thingy. I can sympathize with that. Last time I bought ammo for my Lee Enfield .303 they were $4 a pop. And that was a few yrs ago.

my humble apologies for not replying PaulG. I didn't notice the no alerts tool. :dash2:
I'm in Nova Scotia.
The blasting cabinet and the cabinet I use for a hobby a friend and I have been doing for 2 decades. refinishing firearms using kg coatings gun kote.
Since I started this thread I stuck a toe in the powder coating pool and use it for that as well.
I haven't posted much because all I've been doing with the fj is turning gas in to noise.
I did the Barnett clutch upgrade this spring and doing the exhaust upgrade now.
Took this picture monday..SWMBO'd insisted on going for a ride..

Sspeed,
Welcome to the FJ evening campfire. Pull up a seat, relax, and be among friends.
The FJ is almost two bikes in one. The first one, below 5000 RPM, is fairly nice, strong, and reliable. The second one, above 5000 RPM is something of a beast. Still friendly and reliable, but a real fire-breathing beast. Going above 5000 RPM? Better get a grip first, because the bike is quite capable of
leaving, and it will be your own lookout about being on board or not when it does. It is quite capable of outrunning the brakes and tires, so have considerable open road ahead of you when you start exploring the high RPM range.
Speaking of old and dangerous tires, you will really want to know this:
TIRE AGE DECODER (click and scroll down)
https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11 (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tiretech/techpage.jsp?techid=11)
The FJ is a strong, heavy machine. Go with good tires. We all make our own choices, but for me, a tire for the FJ is DONE after about eight years, no matter what tread remains. To your good health . . .
.
tks Red. I put brand new tires on her when I got it.. that, brake checks and oil changes are my post buying routine unless the tires on it are relatively new.
I've stretched her legs a bit by just rolling in to the throttle in 5th..
I don't posses the skills to push it to it's limits and have no intention of trying.
