I finally installed one of RPM's undercut gear transmissions.I also installed a shift detent kit and my son Ian found me an NOS shift shaft still in the original package. When I bought the bike it only kicked second and third gear out under hard acceleration above seven thousand rpm but it progressed to the point I was shifting by 4000 rpm. What a difference now. It's the first time I have been able to accelerate through redline in second and third on this bike. Even with the bad tranny my bike still felt very competitive but now that I can run wide open it's a blast. My yellow FJ1100 has a good transmission but was way down on power. It would run ok up to 5000 rpm but groggy above. while I was working on my black fj's tranny the OEM carbs on my yellow one started overflowing gas so I put the flatslides on the yellow one and got a huge increase in hp. I replaced two float valves in the OEM carbs and put them back on the yellow one . I don't know what changed other than the new float valves but now the OEM carbs are running great and pulling strong all the way to redline. It is still no match for the black FJ with flatslides but it hauls ass now. My son and I took them both out for a ride yesterday. We got some great runs up and down Geiger grade and the Virginia city truck route.
I'm envious you are still riding. Me, not so much.

We have a good winter riding season here. We can get a lot of snow dumped on us but down in the valleys it usually melts quickly . Going below zero degrees fahrenheit only happens a couple weeks of the year. Three weeks is about the longest period I can remember the weather preventing me from riding. Your deep freezes and everlasting snow cover I hear about in Minnesota would be miserable but at least you guys don't have the wild fires that engulfed us in smoke for two months last summer. I hope you get an early spring Ted.

Yes I did the shift forks also. I'm still getting used to the crunch feeling of my shifts with the detent kit but the shifts feel very solid now. When you make it back to Reno again we will have to take a ride with Paul . I'll coerce my son to ride one of my FJ's and we can have a four FJ mini rally.

Congrats with new transmission ! must be a good feeling when you have done the repair yourself .I had a fj1100 many years ago that had exactly same symptoms got worse over time and one day the rear wheel locked up when i was driving slow in a roundabout .Then i could not get any gear engaged and pulling in clutch did not free up the backwheel so had to pick up the bike with a wan.Later a workmate knew a guy that fixed it for 600 usd Yamaha wanted twice that price this was about 30 years ago.My opinion is that Yamaha should have fixed this for free on the bikes that had this problem.
I also have the RPM shift dentent installed seems that it has a break in period because the shifting is now after have used it over time faster and smoother almost like quickshifter

I once told Randy I've never experienced popping out of 2nd gear. He asked not even above 8000 RPM (or something like that). UH guess I'll not experience it either. :pardon:

Chasing my son up the hill when he is riding his zzr1200 my bike spends half it's time between 6500 and 9500 rpm's.
