******Effective immediately******
Political posts, discussions or content will not be allowed on the FJowners.com forum.
I have been on vacation and working on my house nonstop. I haven't seen a computer or television in almost 6 days. But, in this time frame there have been several people who have reported posts to moderators, I have also received PM's and emails.
So, enough is enough.
As of this point forward, there will be zero political content on the FJowner.com forum. If anyone posts anything political it will be immediately deleted. If someone wants to keep posting political content, then their posts will have to be approved before being posted.
Now, before anyone starts in about their 1st amendment rights being violated, this is a privately owned forum and there are rules. This is now a new rule.
If you want to speak your piece on politics, get your own domain name, set up your forum and I'll let everyone know they can visit for political content.
This forum was founded and is currently based around the Yamaha FJ1100 & FJ1200 motorcycle.
That is reason each of us signed up; not for political content.
Now, lets get back to FJ's.

....oh for God's sake, no.
I whole-heartedly agree with the new rule.
But I find it somewhat ironic that in a previous election year, a similar request from the Yahoo group moderator to end the politics and get back to FJ topics was met with a flourish of negative comments and cries of censorship. It ultimately led to the formation of this very site.
I think this the best move for the health of our forum.
There are plenty of other websites out there to discuss politics.....only very few that discuss FJ's.
It's all good :good:

Seems good to me! I'm here for FJs anyway.
So No More talk about which FJ year is the best then?
Or have I got this Political thing incorrect.
Btw it's the 84 (popcorn)
Hey guys I'm thinking about giving this a shot on the rear and then wondered what oil I should be using
I hope you know I am kidding
:sarcastic: Phew! And I thought you were paying waaayyyy too much for that tire.
Well it's been a slice people. The lilacs are blooming and my new front tire is finally here. So it's back to my original programming. Whoo Hoo!!!!
"Hey guys I'm thinking about giving this a shot on the rear and then wondered what oil I should be using" :rofl2:
Well done Randy. Might I just say that the 'political' section has been a unique window into the USA for an outsider.

While whatever it was that brought this to a head was going on, I went interstate to look at a 1200 my son wanted to buy. He'd injured his shoulder just days before and was unable to ride and bike trailer hire was not practical, so we decided to drive up and I would ride it back if he bought it.
While my son and the seller discussed a possible deal, his father and I talked bikes. He was a similar age to myself and had done, and still did a lot of riding and conversation flowed easily. This guy had definitely earned his stripes, the places he's ridden and the trips he'd done and the bikes he'd owned, all of which were at odds with his current ride. He'd embarrassed his entire family and friends by bringing this thing home a couple of years ago. Not only that, it is his daily rider and he's ridden it around Australia the long way (via the Alice) 20,000km and would have been doing it again now had his son not broken both wrists on (off) his push bike (yes, I know, the irony) which is why his motorbike was for sale, his work wouldn't let him reschedule the 3 months leave he'd arranged for the trip.

Anyway, he asked if I'd like to take it for a ride, how could anyone say no to that? So I did, I don't know what to say. My son took some shots of me on it, I have threatened him if they find their way onto social media. These things only have forward controls and you can only just get into second gear at around town speeds. I simply don't know how you could ride such a thing any distance, let alone around the country.
On a lighter note, he then offered me a ride on this.....
This was purely a bit of fun on his part but he has ridden it surprising distances to rallies. It's a Honda 125 "Race Replica", the tank is only 4" wide. It felt like if I hit a big enough bump it would disappear up my arse. The photo doesn't convey just how small it was.
The remaining bike was a special edition MV Agusta 1190 RR Brutale factory race ready/road registered machine. In standard form they make a whopping 208hp, this one I believe made another 20hp. The full titanium exhaust, with butterflies, cost $10k!! He recently replaced the radiator - $3k. Weighing up these sort of costs in FJ terms seem ridiculous. He didn't offer me a ride on that!
We bought the bike and the ride home in Southern Australian Autumn weather was brilliant, a real treat after the lock-down.

OK, it's not FJ, but it could be, and it's not bitumen, but it doesn't matter, it's just a great couple of minutes of feel good motorcycling in NZ.

Oh how nice it would be to live somewhere where you can just wander off-road like that.
I'd be locked up for riding like that anywhere around home, unless it was at a dedicated off-road riding facility.

Fair enough. So who else thinks the '92 is undoubtedly the greatest year of FJ, not to mention the most fun bike ever manufactured? :flag_of_truce:
Every year was the greatest year for FJ's..................but '89 was the best of the greatest :sarcastic: :sarcastic:
Good movement Randy!
In our Spanish Whatsupp & Telegram groups politics is forbidden from the 1st day
They're all good, but the first year of the 1200 was THE best. 86 ambulance all the way!
Everyone knows it's the 84. It was all downhill from there.

So, is the 85mm bore 1447cc version the "Alaska" mod then?!
I don't agree with this, not at all!

Clever. Indeed!
Thank you Randy. Good call. Even though I never stepped into the shit sandwich of politics here, I'm glad to see the topic gone. I started to be concerned about how I really felt about some of the people I considered friends, based on their political views and comments. It's far to divisive to let run a muck.
After all, we all know the 91 pink stripe is the best year, hands down!!!!

Yours sure is pretty!
...... The best FJ??
With all of the years of the FJ's, What are the differences??...... without mods.
.... horsepower
.... torque
.... brakes
.... weight
.... gas mileage
.... known for handling
.... best in the wind tunnel (less drag)
.... others??
is there a best year??

For me, it was the near-perfect wind tunnel of the '92. I immediately fell in love with the beast because of that.
Also, vibration. Finally freeing up those 15-year-old rubber mounts (ugh) was quite gratifying.
The best one is the one you are on!

My 90 FJ12 is a great bike, better than my 84 FJ11. But, I enjoy riding the 11 more than the 12, it just seems to have a greater "fun" factor.

The 84 clicks the most boxes. Other? How about king of the dragstrip for 1984. However I think the pink striper is the prettiest. Followed by that dark blue with the gold stripes. I do like the blue of my 93 though and I always wanted one of the pearl white and silver ones. There are just too many choices and if I was a rich man I would have one of every color.

Yep, this has always been the answer and still rings true today. Everybody has vastly different expectations of their bikes depending on the sort of riding they do, but you'll never hear anyone say "great bike, but I wish I had the XXXX model"
The differences when new were relatively minor and updates typical for the era, however, after 25-35 years of use and abuse, even without mods, they are all different bikes now and the lines blurred and overlapped.
For me, it's the 3XW. I do big miles and long days and still put in the occasional 1000 km day and many more days not much short of that. Smoothness and weather protection are paramount. However, and this is where the mods kick in, I've made it quick and nimble like the early bikes (in fact, way more of both) but with better handling, I have the best of all worlds.
Everyone gets there kicks out of FJ's for different reasons and everyone loves the model they own, it doesn't get any better than that and it's a great testament to the almighty FJ's enduring design.
I have spent most of my working life in the automotive industry, in just about every role you can think of and I can think of no other manufacturer that went out on top like Yamaha did with the FJ at the end of a decade long model run with a machine that 35 years later remains so usable, even when pitted against modern machinery. Plenty of modern bike owners here (myself included) who still sing the praises of the mighty FJ as a 2020 bike.
Yamaha could not possibly have imagined in a world of automotive obsolescence that 35 years later their classic would be used and revered on such a scale.
Just keep an eye on that xxxxxx speed and it will serve you well
Noel
..... I have had my 86, for more then 10 years now. And I do believe, it was born with 125hp (torque?) Is that the scale for all FJ's?
I would think, the 1100's, would weigh less, has a shorter wheel base. is more aerodynamic.
And Maybe, I should know this, but what is 3XW, 3cv and 1tx?
And brakes, have the brakes improve over the years?
For me it's the 93 3xw model. I wouldn't say any model was "better" than the other, apart from the 1100 all the 1200's had the same HP and torque figures so their equal there, It's just the improvements made through the range that make the 3xw model the most refined. Biggest fairing so better weather protection, bigger frame rails so stronger, rubber engine mounts so vibe free riding, and to me better looks and paint scheme.
They can all be made even better with the upgrades to brakes, suspension, wheels etc that are available to them. I was thinking a while ago about buying a brand new bike but then thought what can a new bike do better than what I've got now, mine goes, stops, and rides probably as good if not better and far more reliable than what's available now.
I've only owned a 1989 that was road ready, and I am more than pleased with it.
It's outlasted countless other motorcycles, of nearly every type.
The '89 is probably right for me. I think the earlier versions would be too sporty and the later versions too "modern" as I'm not a fan or ABS/etc.
I'm working on something earlier, I'm excited to see how that little front tire works out for me.

Hi Brook, the acronyms identify the model types of each FJ 1200.
The 1 TX is the 86-87 model FJ1200 (16" front wheel, twin piston front brake calipers)
The 3CV is the 88-90 model FJ1200 (17" front wheel, 4 piston brake calipers and updated fairing)
The 3 XW is the 91 onwards model FJ 1200 (Rubber engine mounts, ABS brakes option, Updated fairing and chin spoiler/belly-pan)
In each model the exhausts also changed and there were other minor changes (for example slight bodywork/panel changes, mirrors, switchgear etc).
But, of course, the 3CV remains by far the most powerful and best looking of all FJ's, just like their owners :sarcastic: :sarcastic: :sarcastic: (just don't tell Pat that !!)
I didn't even know we had a Politics section...
