Title: Is polishing parts considered maintenance?
Post by: jamesearthdrum on May 03, 2020, 05:54:11 PM
:good2: Well seeing that I am going to need to keep up with it, I should think so. So, with all this staying/working from home that's going on, I decided it was time to do some long over do maintenance on the '89. I knew it was time to change the fork oil and wanted to install the oil cooler kit I purchased a few months back. And for the sake of full discloser, I managed to drop the bike in the garage as I was putting it away for the winter last Dec. That's another tale. The main faring stay got bent as the left hand mirror was turned into a pretzel, so I needed to remove the fairing. Lots o' plastic rain as that was done. I have my Plastifix kit at the ready. So, since I had the forks apart, my modditis reared up and I now have the RPM fork valves installed.    I had removed the downpipes to install the oil cooler kit, so I thought, why not give them a polish. I also had the forks off, so, why not polish the lowers while I'm at it. Here's a a couple photos of my progress so far. I have a vid of the first go at the downpipes but need to find out how to post it. I posted on the FJ page on the FaceBook of the stuff I'm using. I'm looking for suggestions on how to safely remove some corrosion on the fork tubes? I'll post more of my progress as it goes along. Stay safe everyone.

After you install those beautiful SS pipes, and before you heat them up for the first time, take a clean rag with some lacquer thinner or alcohol and wipe all your greasy fingerprints off the tubes.
If you don't, when the pipes get hot, the fingerprints will burn into the polished finish.

A beautiful job James!  :good:
