Are the black rubber plugs that cover the pilot jet necessary? The carbs on my bike don't have them, but an older extra set I have laying around does...
None of my carbs have those plugs cars or bikes.
No plugs. The plugs are for Mikuni carbs that draw fuel for the pilot jet circuit from another source than that of the head of the jet.
That is why most of the aftermarket pilot jets have the additional holes in the side of the jet.

Sorry, new guy here and that last reply is, for me, a little obscure.
Confirm with 1991 FJ1200 3XW Mikuni BS36 CV carbs the pilot jet caps are not required? I have the pilot jets that do not have any breather holes, although you can buy the with the holes??. Seems to defeat the purpose of having a "jet" with a blocked passage at one end, so confused.
My very secondhand (lemon/rip off) had no caps fitted.
There is no cap.
The holes on the side do nothing.
The flow is through the tip which is sealed on the taper of the pilot jet tip and the carb body.
