I'm just about to put my '89 back on the road after a very long lay-up. The underside of the petrol tank was looking a little jaded so I pulled off the heat shielding so I could paint it,without giving much thought to replacing it! Is this a pre-cut part you can buy somewhere,or if not can someone direct me to where the material (or any suggested substitutes ) can be purchased and the means of sticking it to the tank? Thanks in anticipation.
Not that I'm suggesting it's the best idea, but I've seen several people stick that aluminum ducting tape to the bottom to reflect the heat. Can't say how well that would stop heat absorption though. Anyone else please feel free to chime in.........

I had read awhile ago (on this site) about heat shield for the chin fairing, same material. A guy said he had gone to the home depot and they had some thing that could be spray glued into place

You can get woven fiberglass insulation like that from Summit Racing. I used Gorilla glue to stick it on. Most tenacious shit I have ever used. Took 2 weeks to wear off my hands. Good thing I didn't jerk off that night.
The main auto parts stores here sell a "heat wrap" for headers and exhaust that is like a fabric. It comes in a roll about 4" wide and 4 feet long. Strips of that glued on would work.

I had read that same thread. this is what they sell at Home Depot. It's just a foil blanket--no fiber insulation. I had bought it to use on my chin fairing. I didn't know the tank was supposed to have a heat sheild until I read this thread. Damn P.O.'s.! :ireful: I may try it on the tank too.

yeah, I should have enough for my bike and about 12 others. :lol: I'll bring the roll to the rally. I havn't tried it yet---I was looking for a good fibrous type covering but havn't found one --not looking real hard--- I guess asbestos has gone the way of 94 octane leaded gas? :biggrin:

look up sound deader w/heat shield from Crutchfield car insulation it has a 3-M adhesive. look for this Dynamat Xtreme Wedge Pack it's like $39.95
I got some generic heat shield material from my local yamaha dealer, $30 cut to shape, peel and stick. Used it in my chin fairing works great nice and thin self adhesive backing, (Sticks great) some kind of woven material and metal shielding. I don't remember the name brand but it was a generic heat shield say 2' x 2'. If all else fails try the dealer you might be surprised by what you find there.
