Ive just purchased a 1991 fj1200 that was originally sold in japan and now Ive accessed the bike and worked out were to start on the rebuild I'm lucky that after some advice from this forum in regards to idle speed and clean carbs the motor is very smooth and powerful but i cant find the valve clearance spec's in thou's of inches or metric anywhere for my model .apparently there are different cams for different country's ive found the formula for converting thou's to metric but don't know the clearances for 1991 japan model cam shaft bucket shims ???
I believe the valve clearances are the same for ALL FJ1100/1200's regardless of where they were sold.

Convert almost any measurements to any other system (or rate, time, speed, et c.) with a quick FREE Units Converter from Josh Madison:

Thanks guys from that info using the converter max tolerances would be 006 thou inlet and 8 thou exhaust in inches does this sound right?
I cant do anything until I order the shim tool from rpm after xmas except do the measurements but knowing the tolerances now will certainly speed up the process
at the moment my exhausts are #1 010-009#2 006-008 #3 006-006 #4 006-006
inlets are #1 006-006 #2 006-005 #3 004-005 #4 006-006
which seems not to bad for 90000 km motor whith no service history cams look good cam chain looks good so hopefully it's still got lots of life left in it
Most of your exhaust clearances are too tight which is no bueno. IIRC, your metric to english conversion is correct. I believe I set my valves to .006 and .008.

.006" for intake and .008" for exhaust would be ok but torwards being too loose for me.I prefer to set my valves to .005" for intakes and .007" for exhaust.I check my valves every two or three thousand miles and I have not had a valve drift too tight from those settings in that interval of time.I just multiply my " measurements by 25.4 to convert them to mm.If a .005" blade slides into the gap the gap is going to be larger than .005" even if it's tight if it is loose it may be .0055"or .00575".At .00575" x 25.4=.146mm right at the edge of spec. torwards the loose side (on intakes).
