I see that the headlite is held on by 3 metal clips. Does that mean the lens can be taken off. 84 1100.
Yes, but in addition to the 3 clips there is an adhesive sealing the lens to the plastic body.
Take the clips off, place headlamp body in oven set at 200 degrees for 15 minutes to soften the adhesive, then the lens should come off before it cools. Obviously, wear gloves.

Please let us know how it goes. I've been meaning to remove mine to see what's involved in some fabrication ideas for the headlight. Mine is also a 1984.

My reason for asking is because I had a little help from my roomate who carelessly set my fairing down, light first, on the cement garage floor and broke my perfectly good lens. Nobody is perfect, eh.
I thought I may be able to find just another lens for sale. I found a good light assembly for $30, so I'm going with that
for a replacement. but I may keep the assembly as a spare, just in case. One of the plastic posts on the top of the assembly that has a rubber grommet around it, had broken off, which I repaired.
I guess a resealing of the lens would be needed to use it if the lens is taken off?
If you are careful when you pull the hot glass away from the body, you will have sealant on the edge of the glass as well as sealant on the plastic body.
While the sealant is still hot and soft, take a 1" (25.4mm) putty knife and scrape the sealant off the edge of the glass and put it back on the plastic body. Spread it around to even it out, you'll see what I mean when you do it...
That way all you have to do is heat everything back up to 93.3*C or because you are the OP and you asked the question and you live in Albuquerque, New Mexico, which is located in the USA, you should probably use the local unit of temperature measurement, which is 200*F which should be the lowest setting on your residential oven.
Anyhoo....
Heat everything back up and put it back together.
