Earlier this month, I underwent a little operation which, according to the Specialist, should prevent me from riding for at least six weeks.
I'm not so sure about this, but, will I still be welcome, even if I can not ride and have to drive down in my station wagon.

I may even be able to entice a couple of non FJ riders to come for a look see on the Saturday, if that is OK.

Hoping favorable consideration will be afforded to my plea.

We are at 4 dyno runs. Any takers for a fifth?

Can you let me know which nights you'll be staying so I can shuffle beds.

Bed allocation thus far is Ray and Alena guest room both nights.

Alf, bedroom Friday.

Noel, are you arriving Friday or Saturday? Your usual is suite is reserved (accompanied by McLaren Vale cab sav. Figs are extra  :sarcastic:)

Real men - swag (I'm not, so I have my own bed with SWMBO aka Nic)

There are a variety of sleeper lounges in the house, so first in best dressed, but no snorers! (only kidding, I'll strangle them in their noisy fucking sleep).
If you snore, Alf has promised to throw his right boot at you, without removing it, if I haven't sorted it out before he hears.

The chooks are sorting breakfast, and there are a couple of pigs, lambs, and cattle getting nervous, not just because we are close to New Zealand ( "Baaa" means - "NO!" ).

hey I'll be there for more than a day  :good:

Bewdy Al, I'll reserve a lounge for you.

IIRC that first lounge didn't suit so we'll try a different one, perhaps a banana bedstead?

It looks like about 12 of us so far so it should be fun.

Troy, tell the chooks that I'll be camping in my usual spot next to the hen house so they need to stock up on ear plugs.
Reserve the first dyno run for me as that will give me time to re-jet and have a second run at the end.
Looking forward to catching up with every one.

We are planning to leave Thursday Alan, so far I think going down the shortest (coast road) way and arrive at Troys estate sometime Fri Arvo. We are driving down as we will be towing a bike trailer behind us........empty on the way down, and hopefully loaded on the way home.  :good:

Probably camp overnight somewhere before Sydney and then do the 3-4 hour run to Troys on Friday.

With a high risk of being turned back because of snow on my usual routes, I'll be coming up the coast. Can't leave until Friday so it's a 1000km day (ETA Fri PM, in time for drinks). With short daylight this time of the year the question is, do I play roo roulette in the morning or the evening? Can't squeeze that many kms in between dawn and dusk.

Looking forward to it, it's always a great weekend and you are an excellent host. Nowra and Bermagui manshed weekends are my favourite events.

I'll bring the Red!

Noel

Noel,

Whats the concern, you don;t have to do any dawn or duck riding for this trip?

By looking at this daylight schedule for Sept 27, you will have more than 12 hours of sunlight on that day. https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@3923533?month=9&year=2019 (https://www.timeanddate.com/sun/@3923533?month=9&year=2019)

At 1000km and traveling at the 100km, you have a 10 hour ride. Add an hour or two for stops & fuel and you have still arrived at your destination within the daylight hours and no dawn or dusk riding required.

You have already set a goal of being there for drinks Friday evening, so if you leave at 6:00am (which is 5 minutes after sunrise) you should be there around 6:00pm (7 minutes before sunset), the perfect time for dinner & drinks.

We all have faith you you can do it.

After five weeks sick leave, asking for the Friday off would not go down well so, it will be an "Early Satdee Mornen" arrival for me.
I can bring my swag and a tent if necessary.

This time, I must hijack Pete, Alf and Noel to get the low down on some or the best roads in the Victorian High Country, so be prepared.

Noel, you still have not answered my earlier question!

Randy unlike U.S wild animals our poor Kangas/ Wombats don't have watches or night vision goggles, so the norm is after 7am and start being careful 4.30 pm. I forgot the Drop Bears get out of the trees at 5pm, as you know these are the most dangerous for overseas visitors
Title: Re: Nowra Shed Day

Bozo is right.

Noel, I'd risk the early roo/deer run as I know for sure they like to play 'Surprise' most in the evenings at my place, although it could be different down your way.

Randy, the chart is right, however the roos like to move around most in hours just before and after sunrise, and the same for sunset. The next issue is they are invisible until they hop right out in-front of you, no matter how much light you throw down the road. Why do I say they are invisible? They are camouflaged to blend into their native environment, so unless you see the glow of their eyes, they really are invisible. Plus, if you can see one, it is a certainty you can't see the other 20 lurking as they'll likely have their heads down in the grass munching away.
They are also completely unable to comprehend cars. On my street if I see a roo just standing beside the road, watching me approach they often hop out literally as I pass them. My wife and I have had a number of dents in the side of the car as the silly thing has literally started trying to cross the road while the car is next to them! I'm not kidding. This is a daily risk just going to work.
Another factor is how dry it is here at the moment. Due to roads having ditches either side there is often more green grass beside the road than in the bush. Hmmm, good tucker the roos think.

A lesser, but equally dangerous aspect for Noel is he'll be coming through an area where there are six species of deer; fallow, red, chital, hog, rusa and sambar. These suckers don't tend to be moving as much as the roos during dawn/dusk, but there are enough carcases beside the road to give me pause. They are nearly in plague proportions, but no where near as common as roos.

Then there are wombats. It eats roots and leaves  :sarcastic:. These critters are SOLID, 20-25kg (44-77lbs), and not as small as they might seem. A local valley has the most I've ever seen. It is not uncommon for cars to have the front wheel ripped off by these low slung bush bull-dozers.
Title: Re: Nowra Shed Day
Post by: Urban_Legend on August 31, 2019, 08:01:01 PM
Wombats are considered as slow (sometimes not that slow either) moving speed  bumbs. However a normal speed bump has more give and is softer. Hitting a roo is like hitting a light pole, that then laughs at you and hops away.
I tagged a wallaby 2 weeks ago on the bike. Luckily I saw it coming (most unusual) and was able to slow down before I hit it. Did didn't throw me off but had a sore foot for a day OT two.

Thats correct Noel, the trailer could be for furniture, ( I like the more logical conclusion though  :good: ), but I won't count my chickies before they hatch.

Again thinking logically, If it's a 3 or 2 bike trailer and you're only getting 1 there's room for your bike but you say it's "Empty on the way down", so it must be more than 1

No, just picking up the one Alan. Theres a great fella we know from Nowra who was talking to me while I was having a couple of ports one night, and I said, I really would like to have a nice, clean original 1100 in the shed one day. Next thing I know I am heading to a Manshed Weekend, and will be leaving (hopefully) with a nice 1100 securely tied down on a trailer.  :shok:  Really looking forward to having this bike in my shed keeping the other 2 company, and the Historic Rego in Qld is actually not too bad, so I think it will work out just fine. Still trying to work out a bike trailer actually for the trip down/back.    Getting excited now  :good:

John,

Oh, I remember seeing them all. I also recall traveling at all hours to and from the 2014 rally. I do know that we did ride slower after dark for all of the reasons you mention.

Hell, my wife and I completed 1400+ km trip from Jindabyne back to Brissie in two days. We left Jindabyne in the late morning/early afternoon hours and arrived in Sydney during the evening commute time. I don't recall where we stopped for the night, but it was early in the wee hours of the morning. After sleeping to the late morning again, we started off again for Brissie. During that trip, we saw plenty of roos, wombats and got a ton of rain. So much rain we had to stop under overpasses to let it pass as it was unsafe to continue.

We stopped at some tourist stops on the second day to see some of the aussie things: Koala's, wombats in captivity, petted some roos, etc. We definitely did not split it up evenly, because of the late start on the second day, we were ready to be off the road. So, we pushed through the night that second day.

I remember stopping at a McD's in the gold coast area for a wifi signal as we were thinking of bedding down there. They were closed by the wifi still worked.  Brissie was just over an hour away, we were not stopping and continued on.

We stopped at the Novotel at the brissie airport and I walked in to check for a room. The staff was dressed to the 9's and they told this dirty, tired and worn out from the road American, sorry we are full. I did ask him, if there was a room available, how much and I seem to recall $300.00.  From there we pulled into the Brissie airport ring road looking for wifi to find a place to stay. It wasn't but a couple of minutes we were surrounded by the police and escorted off the property.

Now keep in mind, my wife has never in her life ridden for more than three or four hours and never any distance riding. The most miles she has ever put on at one ride was probably 200 miles (321km). We head up to the mountains and tool around up there with leisurely riding. One more thing, my wife rides a FJ1200 and a V-Star 650 at home.

Since we were going to be over there, she wanted a little smaller bike. Well somehow, we settled on a Yamaha Zeal 250. This thing could not push its way through the air wake coming off the front of a diesel truck. Climbing the hills, now that was another steep learning curve. Downshift to 2nd or 3rd, get it spun up to redline was the only way she could maintain some speed. She learned how to speed shift, draft and use the low-pressure areas beside of diesel truck to make these passes. It was a long trip, but we pushed through. She was a trooper hustling that Zeal like she had been doing it for years. She adapted to get to where we needed to be. We arrived in Brissie more than a full day before we were scheduled to and that gave us some time to recover before heading up to Cairns.

As we look back now, we can see some of the enjoyment, but at the time the riding portion of the trip was not pleasant.

So, since Noel mentioned highway travel, I figured it would be easy for him since he is accustomed to distance riding.

I understand that wildlife, regardless of where you live wants to kill you as they like to jump out when you get there. Just look at Dan (Giantkiller) and Ron (Cap N Ron) both recently taking on deer across the chest. Hell, that is Dan's second that I am aware of. I saw many dead carcasses and torn up cars in both countries whether roos & wombats or deer or raccoon.

Well, let's just hope we can replace the "if" in the above statement with "When".

Looking forward to a great weekend and catching up with every one.

There is a saying common in aviation .... "There are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are no old bold pilots"

Much the same could be said for bold riders with a cavalier approach to known hazards, such as wildlife. It is unpredictable and I have encountered many who have not read the rules or chose not to abide by them, appearing in places and at times where and when they simply shouldn't. A wise rider will at least observe what is known of their behaviour. It's no guarantee but it improves the odds.

The "protective shield of youth" has faded, the invisible force field that once allowed me to fang through the night at warp speed deluding myself that if some animal jumped in front of me I'd simply employ my lightning quick reflexes and take evasive action, simple. Of course that was young me, in hindsight, old me wonders how I ever managed to survive being young long enough to become old.

If caught after dusk or at night in roo country, which seems to happen more often than it should, I ride at 50 kmh, no matter how far I still have to go. Even this is no guarantee I won't hit one (as Troy said, they even run into the side of you) it just means it probably won't kill me and the bike has a better chance of still being rideable.

That is a great offer Phil, thank you. That would be absolutley perfect, apart from getting the trailer back to you, don't think I could do the trip there and back twice in my allotted days off. But that is an option, I will see what I can do, just waiting for my neighbour to get home who said a few weeks back he has a mate with a bike trailer etc. I did find a fellow here who hires out his bike trailer for $30 per day, so will weigh it all up.

I did search for one way bike trailer hire in Nowra etc, could not find any.  Will see you at the Manshed Phil hopefully,

No problems there Phil, you'll just have to buy another bike that's in a Barn in Qld...

At least you won't have to tow the trailer uphill.

Or as I did, fly back the following weekend and ride it home. Flights are only a bit over $100.

I'm a big user of those. Since number plate scanning technology became standard on most police vehicles I have been done a number of times for driving an unregistered vehicle at $770 a pop. On each occasion it was not my vehicle.
Yet another example of why the insurance should be on our driver's licence, not on the vehicle. I can only drive one vehicle at a time and I'm not aware of any vehicle ever taking itself out for a drive.

I hate the way insurance is a scam these days Noel, but I'd guess its because if you were insured as the rider/driver, the insurer would have to base your risk and premium on the bikes/cars you would likely ride/drive - the premium would be a lot lower for say a Ford Fiesta, than a Porsche 911 GT3 RS, or a FJ1200 than a V4 Panigale (as would, in their opinion, be the risk). How would the insurer be able to set an appropriate premium without knowing which vehicles you were going to ride/drive? - and if you had an accident on one they hadn't included for in their risk assessment, surely they would tell you that any insurance would be invalidated because of that?. Their backstop would be to always assume you're going to be riding the highest risk bike possible and base your premium on that - then they are covered and so are you....but at a huge cost!

Over here, our normal standard vehicle insurance also cover fire damage and loss due to theft as well as vehicle damage and 3rd party claims (you can buy 3rd Party only insurance, but its usually not worth the premium saving unless you have a pretty worthless bike), so they have to know the bike to be able to cover it. Insurance here is nearly always based on both the vehicle AND the rider/driver. It's also a rider/driver's responsibility in law to ensure that both they and the vehicle they are riding/driving, are properly insured. For most riders, their own bike insurance will cover them as a rider for 3rd party claims if they are riding a different bike to the one they have insured, but only if that bike is covered by separate insurance as well by it's owner/insurer.

If I let someone else ride my bike and they have an accident, unless they have full coverage for any bike they ride, they're only covered for 3rd Party claimants, and as the owner of the bike, I'm not a 3rd Party - so if they trash my bike, I only have friendship/honesty/trust, or a civil claim for damages to get my bike repaired/replaced.

There used to be such things as "Rider Policies" over here, where a rider could have a policy giving full coverage for any bike the were riding, but these were phased out in the 1980's - eventually they assumed that anyone wanting a Rider Policy was going to want to ride the biggest, fastest, most expensive bike they could find (without having to buy it) and so the put their premiums up to cover that eventuality/risk - pretty soon, nobody wanted Rider Policies any more.

In my family, my wife, my son and myself are named as secondary riders on any of our bikes that we expect to ride (because of his age, our son is only insured to ride his Fazer 600 and Liz's CRF 230, but Liz and I are named on the insurance of all of our bikes) - and we have multi-vehicle policies for our cars with named primary & additional drivers for each car.

It doesn't pay to risk a prosecution for not having appropriate insurance here - once that happens, you're screwed for future insurance for ANY vehicle (sky-high premiums intended to prevent you from being able to get insurance and hence be a risk again).

Noel s referring to "Compulsory Third Party (CTP) Personal Insurance" (Green Slip Insurance)
This covers injury to Other Persons Only, not property.
I have two 1200cc motorcycles which cost me approx AU$700 / Year for Green Slip Insurance and a Station Wagon at approx AU$550 / Year.
So, my chances of injuring "Another Person" (third party) is higher riding my motorcycle than while driving my Station Wagon!
A 1000cc Honda Fire Blade or a GSXR 1000 are cheaper for Green Slip Insurance than my FJ1200. So is a 1600cc Harley.
Statistics prove that motorcycles around 1200cc account for more injuries to other persons than any other capacity.
That's what my insurance company told me.
Some insurance companies can charge well over AU$900 / Year for CTP insurance on a 1200cc bike.

It's this CTP insurance which should be attached to the Drivers / Riders Licence.
Even at the most expensive, I would sooner pay AU$900 / Year then AU$1950.

Gavin

I did a recce drive up to Wauchope from Belmont on Thursday (for our VJMC overnighter) to see how much of the old Pacific Highway is left. Result - not much. Took the Buckets Way just north of Raymond Terrace then took a right at Booral which took me back to the highway just short of Buladelah. This is a road that I haven't been on in years as it was pretty rough. Happy to say its now a good road. Spent a bit of time in The National MC Museum at Nabiac. They have a very nice, low K, FJ1100 since I was last there. Also saw a beautifully restored 68 DT1. I have one of those in the shed patiently waiting its turn (which may never come).
Returned home via Oxley H'way and Thunderbolt's Way. The bush fire coming down the mountain to Barrington had only just been put out. Strong smell of burnt bush. Also there was a strong smell of brake pads and linings from the ute in front of me and even some smoke! Eke! It was fun punting the turbo Forester through the twisties. Did not see one patrol car until back on Buckets Way at Gloucester.
Have a good Shed Day.

Just in case......Is your shed key still under the door mat?  :scratch_one-s_head:
And, is the fridge stocked? :drinks:

Yes, the key is under the mat. But first you have to find the mat  :sarcastic:

Pete, yes mate. In lieu of a request I've taken a punt and stocked extra chocolate milk for you especially. I went for the high sugar and super caffeine version as I know you hate beer. For every one else there is a mix of holy water, high spirits, and some blood of Christ (yes I'm going to hell)

Quote from: krusty on September 21, 2019, 11:15:52 PMSpent a bit of time in The National MC Museum at Nabiac. They have a very nice, low K, FJ1100 since I was last there.
Have a good Shed Day.
That's right, you missed the Museum at the Rally, is the FJ still the second one in from the start?
Not sure whether they rank them from the cheapest at the start  :sarcastic:

You have a good and safe Oxley weekend (lets hope there's no strong winds about) they even have table and chairs with cover near Mt Seaview turn off. (I don't think it was there last March)

The FJ is first as you enter the paid area. Not too worried about the winds (funny you should mention that). I'm taking my 89 GL1500 GW this time. It handled the curves down the Putty road to Glossodia and back via Wisemans Ferry and Mangrove Mountain not so long ago. Very surprised at how well it handles the twisty bits. I've now got new tyres on it and a low Euro style screen and I overhauled the clutch hydraulics last week. My son is coming long on his ZX14.
BTW my FJ1200 rego fell due last July so I renewed it for 6 months because it then becomes eligible for Historic rego and will only cost me $50 a year, same as the GL.  I will then have 5 bikes (FJ1100, FJ1200, GL1500, CB750F1 & DT175)on Historic registration which will cost only $250 a yeartotal. For the guys up north of the equator the annual Historic reg fee of AUD50 (USD33), in my state of NSW, allows 60 days of riding a year. Full registration for an FJ is about AUD600 p.a. (USD400). Includes 3rd party injury insurance.

Still on our Journey to Troyskies, stopped in yesterday to take a couple of pics of that famous racetrack. Tell you what though, taking a top heavy 4WD down though The Dipper, is extremely unnerving . Police of course were sitting along Conrod Straight and had someone pulled over for speeding, lol.

Thanks everyone for a great FJ weekend!

For a wonder ambos were the main fare, not the minority. Only two other colours, Gav with his 3CV and Johno with his 1TX in blue/red.

Here's a pic of the combined dyno runs, and the line-up of ambos ready to have a run.

Pete's weapon is the standout

For a shed day we actually did a heap of work on the bikes instead of the usual tall stories and beer.

Yummy with her 1219 kit, pods, and jetting, pushed out 116hp and 81ft-lbs of torque. Simon, the dyno guy, said I basically had nothing to do but a carb sync, and even then, not much just a slight tweek.

A huge thanks to Randy for his VERY GENEROUS gifts. They were very welcome  :good2:

Jools, next year mate! But don't forget the Rally in Dartmouth next March.

Pete, Alf, Steve, Greg, see you in a couple of months for your annual Bermie Shed Day Out. I doubt Effie will be ready, but Yummy is ready right now.

Just finished mowing the lawn and will now have a beer and tidy up the shed.

As usual Troyster you didn't disappoint. Alf, Steve, Greg and I had a great weekend. Shame Alf couldn't stay for the whole event.
A great big thank you to Nicole as well, for putting up with us. Thank you also to all those who attended. Great friendship and great stories as usual.
Hope you all can attend the annual Bermagui shed weekend in December. Details will be posted soon. Safe journeys home to Noel, Ray and Alena Wise.
   Regards, Pete. :good2:

Yep, for our first southern Manshed Day, what an awesome time. Will do a proper writeup after we get home Monday arvo, made it halfway home and stopped in Taree overnight, $25 for a quiet powered campsite, great value

What a Great Weekend.
It was good to catch up with everyone and get to know others better.

A big thanks to Troy and Nicole for your hospitality.

See everyone in a couple of months in Bermie.

A big thanks to Troy and Nicole for another great manshed weekend. The catering was par excellence, slow cooked legs of lamb and roast veges followed by rhubarb crumble, man, I cant still smell it and taste it all. The weather couldn't have been better and the company as usual was great.
It was a shame Diesel Dave couldn't make it and that Alf had to return home on Saturday arvo.

It was great to catch up with everyone and this year add a couple of new faces.

Ray (X-Ray) and Alena (Mrs Ray) made the trip down from QL and it was good to catch up with them, an "ambulance" finding it's way onto the trailer Ray just happened to be towing.

I rode up on the Friday in about 12 hours. I would like to say the high average was due to ripping through the countryside at high speed, but it wasn't, just slogging away with minimum stops, great ride none the less. Took 2 days to return home and had a lot more fun, better and faster roads. Second day homeward bound, I saw only one vehicle in the first 4 hours on magic roads.

Roll on Bermagui.

Noel

Thanks everyone for a great FJ weekend!

Troy, the thanks belong to yourself and Nicole.
Once again, this was a fabulous weekend.
Shed days like this are fast becoming a highlight of my year.
Getting together with like minded people over a few (too many) ales, working on and talking about the mighty FJ, well, what could be better. (sorry, appart from RIDING the FJ)
As Troy stated, Saturday commenced with a trip to Jobson Motorcycles where Six (I think) of us had our FJs evaluated.
My beast (on of the two odd ones out) came in at 115.92 bhp at the rear wheel, 77.03 ft-lbs and a fuel/air ratio of 13.8:1. I am very happy.
These readings are with Pod Filters, 117.5 mains, 42.5 pilots, needle second grove from the bottom and a less restrictive exhaust.

It was great to see Ray and Alena from "Sunny Queensland" make the journey down for the weekend.
Also great to catch up with Janet and Dave from the Central Coast as well as everyone else.

The hospitality afforded by Nicole and Troy was terrific, as was the slow cooked roast lamb and veggies.

Long live shed days.

Gavin

Mmmmmmm. Roast lamb and veges. Not fair. Sounds much better than my, and my son's, under cooked chicken parmagiana parmajama pyjama whatever, at Mt Seaview. Sent it back to the kitchen for a new one cooked right through. There's been a change in the team there and the cook is definitely not up to the standard of the previous. Could be backpackers.

Wow, Wow, Wow, what an awesome time we had travelling to, being at, and then heading home from Troys Weekend. Alena and I headed off from Brisbane on the Wednesday morn, stopped overnight in Tamworth, then drove further south Thursday to Bathurst where we did a couple of laps around the road ( racetrack ) in the 4WD. Special place that. Friday morn saw us leaving a (freezing) night in Bathurst, where we ventured further south through some high country of NSW, (beautiful little spring lambs everywhere) stopped in Goulburn which was very chilly as well, and ended up at Troys Friday arvo, to gaze upon a sea of red/white FJ motorcycles.

Great weekend, off to the dyno runs Saturday morn, my new aquisition 1100 from Troy was running a bit rich but easily fixed, and it was great to see Petes 1100 pumping out some great figures, and also Phillip giving the FJR1300 a dyno run. Back to Troys in the afternoon for some R&R, heaps of food, lots of drinks and great banter. I never like the final day, everyone heads off in seperate directions homeward bound, ( Noel was gone before we even got out of bed,  :bye:), and Alena and I headed home from Nowra with a shiny 1984 1100 in tow. ( all of the freshly painted bodywork was safely stored in the back of the Patrol ) Some how we got off the main highway just before Sydney to check the bike and trailer etc, but never got back ON to the main highway through Sydney, but instead spent 1 Hour 20 mins crawling along though outer suburbs like Paramatta and Bankstown, what a mistake that was  :rofl2:.

We made it to Taree about 6 hours north of Nowra that afternoon, stayed the night in a nice quiet caravan park where it was RAINING the next morning while packing up, ( haven't seen the rain for so long in Qld), and got home later that afternoon very tired, but loved every bit of it ( apart from the Sydney detour lol) .

Special thanks to Troy and Nicole for their 1st class hospitality, and everyone who attended, it was great catching up. Here come some piccies -----
