Title: Power Bronze Touring Windscreen
Post by: aviationfred on July 30, 2019, 06:54:34 PM
I received a Power Bronze Touring Windscreen yesterday. WOW is this thing large. A good 2 inches taller than my MRA touring wind screen. This will definitely work well for colder weather riding.

Nice. It does look a little like a xenomorph head, though. I would consider this for my 89, if not for my experimenting with taller spoilers for my MRA windscreen (I had some scrap lexan laying around and a heat gun).

I see the model they offer for the '85 is 73mm taller than the OEM and has a flip at the top. Does the flip at the top reduce wind beatings?

Depends, how tall are you Mike?

I am 6'3" and the +4" windscreen on my '84 made it worse. The buffeting caught me right at my visor line.

If I were smaller, say 5' 8" or so, the dirty air would have flowed right over the top of my helmet.

I'm back to the clean air with my oem windscreen, Arai helmet and earplugs. Much quieter.

6'1".  I guess it wouldn't work.  Darn.

Odd. It looks smoke colored, not bronze.  :-)

Not necessarily, there are a number of factors that can effect helmet buffeting and where it may be different between riders of similar height.

1: Obviously is the riders height. example; I am 5'7" tall and Pat is 6'3" tall.

2: Handle Bar mods. Most mods are for a higher and/or rearward handle bar. Typically this will place the rider at a more upright sitting position and will raise a riders helmet.

3: Seat; Standard OEM, Corbin, Modified OEM or Corbin, Russell Daylong, Tony Archer and others. example; A Corbin seat is typically about an inch lower than the OEM seat and does tend to move the seating area a bit more to the rear, creating a longer reach to the handle bars. This will lower your helmet height.

4: Windscreen Manufacturer; Subtle differences in the actual windscreen make huge airflow changes. Pat posted the Powerbronze flip screen. Here is a version by Ermax. a big difference in design. https://www.motomachines.com/ermax-high-screen-windshield-for-yamaha-fj1100 (https://www.motomachines.com/ermax-high-screen-windshield-for-yamaha-fj1100)

With this information, Generally what I tell owners. Windscreens are a trial and error item. What works great for one person may be intolerable for another.

I have 4 different windscreens for my FJ and use them all for different riding conditions.

I have had both the Power Bronze and Zero Gravity screens on my FJ1100. I can tell you they are slightly different profiles. Lets start with me being 5'9", so not super tall.
The zero gravity screen has a more swept profile, making it lower and allowing the wind to hit me just blow my helmet.
The Power Bronze is more upright in its profile and is a much better wind deflector. The wind hits at bout mid helmet

Thanks everyone.  I read about nose height when seated at a relaxed riding position is what a rider needs to send the air over your head to prevent buffeting.

I don't think I'd want earplugs though.  I don't trust my machine or surrounding drivers enough not to be able to hear something that I might need to react to.

Mike, you need earplugs only if you want to hear your granddaughter whisper to you.

I'm almost 40 and still listen to the '80s tunes I grew up on at full volume.  You know, back when MTV played music.  I don't expect to hear anything by my grandpa years.

It's amazing much how more traffic aware I am when wearing ear plugs.  It filters out all the noise and lets me actually hear the important stuff.

I just wish I had been smart enough to wear them starting 50 years ago.

I was sick of the wind noise on my FJ so spent the money and got the Vario Touring Windshield. almost 200. and took about 6 weeks to arrive. It was a little better but not what I was hoping for. The flip part makes litter difference. I think I will remove my risers because if it duck down just a few inches ahhh. quite.
excluding my Goldwing the quietest bike I have in terms for wind noise is my RD. The rest seem to channel all the wind at my head.

I got a Vario touring screen but opted for the bigger visor option. Having modified handlebars makes my seating position more upright. The bigger flip visor makes a big difference. I'm 5'7" tall I also had the seat modified making it lower similar to a Corbin.
I get little buffeting at 100kmh. Next to nothing at 80kmh and ride with the visor up most of the time.
