Title: New owner, several questions on '86 FJ 1200
Post by: FJ_Kevin on April 24, 2010, 04:55:54 PM
Hi,

I just bought a '86 FJ1200 this week and have some questions.  Overall it is pretty clean (runs great) but suffered a bit cosmetically from sitting.  Specifically, the paint on the left lower frame rail is damaged from where the clutch slave cylinder leaked fluid on it.

Anyone find a close match on the paint color (silver) they would like to recommend?

I also have a few fasteners that have some rust speckles. I noticed someone sells a stainless bolt/screw kit on ebay. I was wondering if anyone had any positive/negative experiences with these.

Finally, I been looking for a fuel tank (as listed in the parts request). Will my '86 gas cap fit in a '84 or '85 FJ1100 tank? I am trying to broaden the net a bit in case I should fine one of these in good shape.

Lots of great info on this site! Already downloaded the owners manual as I did not get one.

Thanks!
Kevin

Kevin,

I've been happy with the stainless steel bolt kit I purchased - it was from desmoparts on eBay.  I wouldn't substitute stainless steel for any of the larger fasteners used on the engine mounts, etc though.  Stainless tends to fail suddenly in higher stress use due to brittleness compared to standard steel fasteners.

No on the tank question - the 84 and 85 use a completely different cap - the 84/85 cap sets up "on" the top of the tank, the 86+ cap sets "in" a recess in the top of the tank.

Good luck and have fun with it!

Chris

As for the gas cap the 1100s cap was different from all the rest and you would have better luck finding hens teeth.

Does the 86-92 share the same gas cap assembly?

Ditto on the SS bolt kits, they're great for the small fasteners that hold things like windshields, but I'd skip them on structural pieces or on very specific bolts (i.e., something with a huge head that retains a big plastic bit, say).  Of course the best place to put SS fasteners is in the carbs (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=656.0).

If the slave leaked to damage the frame's paint, the belly pan is very likely hurting too.

"Anyone find a close match on the paint color (silver) they would like to recommend?" I find that basic Dull Aluminum spray cans, from the parts store, matches very well for frame touch up. For small spots just spray some in a cup and use a tiny brush. Make sure its DULL aluminun though.
