Title: Rpm Fork Valves quick question
Post by: X-Ray on July 10, 2019, 02:32:18 AM
Hello Randy, Robert and everyone,

Just doing a leaking seal replacement on the '93 FJ, and after pulling the forks apart, I have noticed that one of the valves has a distinct wear mark where the spring has somehow rubbed against it, not sure how that happened. Also found that one of the plastic "washers" around the bottom of the valve was actually caught up in the fork spring approx 3"" up from the valve. I can't remember back to when I installed these, but the plastic washers are meant to have that split in them? Both look too neat to have been "broken".

I appreciate any guidance.

Regards

Ray,

I have never heard of the dealing ring falling off before.  I had several people damage one when installing them by letting it come out of the groove and get wedged. This usually cuts the seal.

Yes,  they are a split seal with that angle cut.

I wonder if the seal got knocked off during the installation.

I will have Robert measure the thickness later this morning and let you know.

If the valve did not have the seal installed as you explained. The valve would have not been centered in the fork. That would be the cause if the wear.  I have seen that before and the reason that part of the valve exists.  If acts as a shield to the bypass piston directly behind that part.

No harm with what you are seeing.

Can you measure the thickness of the seals some we see if one just flat wore out and came off the valve?

Thanks Randy and Robert, I have measured both and they are 1.8- 1.9mm thick, pretty sure this is ok? I think it might have been an issue during initial install a few years back, not careful enough. Will be taking extra care this time,

Found some pretty thick sludge at the bottom of the forks, the oil was black etc. Definately time for a clean and refresh.

Yes, that is the correct thickness.
