Title: RPM Tip of the Month
Post by: racerrad8 on July 01, 2019, 07:00:34 PM
This months tip is very important to protect your FJ from future issues.

When removing a seal, any seal from your engine, you must do this very carefully. You should use specifically designed seal removing tools and protect the case from being damaged.

By looking at the attached photos you can see this engine had the crankshaft seal and transmission seal removed at some point in it's life. Unfortunately the bore that houses the seal has been damaged. It is distorted with raised material within the bore.

I was able to carefully get rid of the ridges and will use a light coat of silicone when I install the new seals to make sure the voids get filled up.

The engine in your FJ is the heart of the beast. Take care of it and try not to do things that cause damage.

Hey Randy, when you get a chance, show us what the seal tool looks like and how it works.

I'm at home so can't take photos of the two I use.

Here is one of them. http://rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Tools%3ASealpuller (http://rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=Tools%3ASealpuller)

The other is a rocking lever remover.

I had some custom made from a nylon material....work ok with a little heat applied to the seal.

Some people shouldn't be allowed access to anything more dangerous than a spork. :nea: :nea:

I was just looking at picking up one of these for the cam and crank seals on my Nissan pickup.  Now I know where to order it from!

Seals and bearings; best left to the experienced hand else there could be trouble ahead.
