Title: 17" Rear wheel mod

Searched and found a plethora of info on 17" rear wheel swaps but can't seem to find the confirmation of what I'm looking for. What I have is a 17 x 5.5 89 FZ1000 rear wheel, cush drive brake hanger and brake stay. I thought I read somewhere on here that  I needed to machine down my rear brake hanger to about 1/4" and either bend out or modify the brake stay to clear the tire (180 x 55 x 17). Is my recollection correct or is there other parts I need to collect and modify? Are there other parts to modify in this swap, and if to what? Looking for a good write up or link or some input to clear up my thoughts on this.

I have this same wheel on my FJ - but I have a ducati underslung hanger and some other stuff done so my measurements are probably not applicable to your situation.  You can run a 180 rear tire on this wheel when properly centered...you just have to be carefull about tire selection.

Shaun,

I am running the FZR1000 rim off an 89 as well.  I payed to have my done by a shop.  The shop is Poway Motorcycles, and you can find a link for them in the vendor section.  You could probably contact Bill and he may be able to give you most of the measurements, and he may have info you may have never considered.  The way mine was done was by machining the rear sprocket carrier and pressing a new bearing, machining the counter sprocket cover, machining the break stay, bending the break stay arm, making new dog bones, and machining a front sprocket.  I run a 180 Pirelli Angel on the back and I also have the FZR1000 rim up front, with the original size tread for our bikes.

You can see pics on my web pics page of the rear tire mounted.  The change is well worth any cost involved, especially to get it right.
