Title: Chain life explored
Post by: andyoutandabout on June 04, 2019, 02:22:58 AM
Phew, made it home from the WCR, with horrible noises emanating from my chain. How time flies. I thought it only recently replaced, but my records show sure enough that it was changed 39,000 miles ago. So there you have a real bench mark the next time someone asks about chain life.
Keep records and change your chain at the first sign of trouble.
You'll be glad you D.I.D.

The best lesson here is to keep records. Well done mate.

Original chain and sprockets on my FZ1 lasted until 36,000 miles.

That's the first chain I ever really wore out.  The countershaft teeth were hooked and you could see a significant gap when pulling the chain rearward away from the rear sprocket.

And I'm NOT big on chain maintenance.  Maybe clean and lube 4 times per year.

Plan to replace both sprockets with the chain, Andy. They are a matched group once worn.
