Title: 3rd Annual RPM Fall Rally. Oct 11th - 13th, 2019
Post by: racerrad8 on May 05, 2019, 01:06:05 PM
October 11th - 13th, 2019 will be the date for the 3rd annual RPM Fall Rally hosted out of the RPM facilities.

Friday will be the ride-in day/night and the ride day will be Saturday.

Based on previous years, we are going to host a manshed day on Sunday for those who would like to make minor repairs & adjustments.

This weekend is again followed by a legal holiday on Monday the 14th. That will allow some an extra day off for some to travel home.

There are several lodging choices in the same basic distance from the shop. There are couple of others that are significantly farther away and would be an extended walk if you are leaving your FJ at the shop.

Everyone is welcome to come join the fun and we look forward to seeing everyone.

I am in, Decker canyon today seems like a good training road for the Little Dragon... I might need to run it a few more times. My lack of ride time is showing in my comfort level on the edge.

At the moment, I am planning to ride. Taking I-40 to Barstow. Depending on the weather, either 395 to 120 and into Oakdale or 58 to Bakersfield and up 99.

Google maps shows 1606 miles. I might try for a Bun Burner Gold 1500.

Fred, that's a long and boring ride from Kansas.  You are welcome to trailer the bike to my house, leave truck/trailer here and ride to Oakdale. I have a very secure back yard for your truck so no worries there. Find Rosamond on Google Maps; I'm only 15 miles from the 58 Freeway.

Ryan, that goes for you, too.

Bill and Mark, I sent you both a PM.

Thank you both for the offers. I agree, the ride from Kansas out to California will be a long and mostly boring ride. It will be long and boring whether I ride or drive. Doing this solo, the trip will be more enjoyable on the bike. Gas mileage is a huge difference. 45mpg versus 15mpg. Adjusting the handle bars into their touring position allows me to ride 150-180 miles between stops. I also plan on riding a new stretch of road. US54 from Dalhart, TX to Tucumcari NM. I really would like to get a 3rd official Iron Butt Certificate. I would like to get a Bun Burner 1500 and try to get from Wichita to Oakdale in under 40 hours.

Before we know it, the RPM fall rally will be here.

I have had a couple of accommodation inquiries. The three locations that are within walking distance are:

Holiday Motel
Motel 6
Holiday Inn Express

The Best Western is probably close to a mile or more away from the other locations.

Jerry's is the closest, but it is a tiny place and appears to be a couple of converted homes. I am not aware of anyone staying there in their trips to town.

The best breakfast is located centrally within the three within walking distant. There is another coffee shop a couple block to the west, but not really out of the way to get to by walking wither.

There are times guys share accommodations to keep the cost down, it is probably time to start that process so everyone can have a plan.

More details beginning next month, but I don't see many changes over the past events.

Friday: ride in and head out somewhere for dinner
Saturday: Ride with a lunch stop. Back to the shop for dinner, gathering the digital group around a real camp fire for adult beverages.
Sunday: ride out day and manshed day for those who wish to participate.

Anyone up for sharing a room?  My plans are to arrive Thursday afternoon/evening and depart Monday morning. If your plans are to arrive Friday and leave Sunday morning, that is not a problem.

For anyone that may want to come a day early. Friday, I plan on playing tourist and do a road trip to Monterey (130 miles each way). Lunch plans on Fisherman's Warf or Cannery Row.

I have a question for those who are riding in from significant distances.

I know the first year the ride was pretty ambitious as far as miles & time and a several elected to cut it short. It was pretty hot that year as well.

I would like to know what you guys think. Do we need a bigger ride than last year or shorter or...

I know guys are riding many miles to attend on Friday, ride the group ride on Saturday and then turn around and head home for significant miles on Sunday.

You guys let me know.

I thought last year's ride was about perfect.I wouldn't want it shorter another thirty or fourty miles would be ok,but it was nice to have plenty of time for socializing at dinner.

Since I began attending Rally's, i have found that the 200-275 mile round trip distances work very well.

For many that don't ride 300-400 mile days on a regular basis, the longer rides have a tendency to create early fatigue. Riding at higher speeds than normal on twisty roads and needing to be mentally attentive at all times can bring on fatigue sooner than normal.

No particular preference on ride distances.

A little off topic but for those that use blue tooth communication in their helmets, what brand do you use?

I use an older model Sena 10S. I have a Sena SMH10 for my daughter's helmet when she rides with me. Communications between the two work very well. The 10S has a phone jack that allows me to connect my Plugfones with a phone jack in be mounting base.

Sena 20s.

I use noise cancelling ear buds instead of helmet speakers (as I always ride with ear plugs when not using my intercom) The Sena is renowned for having some of the best speakers in the business but I still struggled to hear through ear plugs, hence the ear buds. The unit comes with a jack to plug them in.

The market is flooded these days with cheap feature laden bluetooth intercoms and I often wonder if for a fraction of the price, they would do the job. They have become so cheap I'm almost prepared to take the punt and throw them away if no good.

If anyone out there has tried these new cheap intercoms in the last year or so, speak up (), it would be great to get some feedback.

Andy, I saw Craig Sunday and convinced him to come to the rally... we are just figuring out how many days to book.  :mail1:
I now need a new battery as mine has gone south with catastrophic failure.

Ah yes....  I hear the Captain, the crew from Brentwood & the gentleman formerly of San Jose is on the way too - the group is forming up very well...!

Things are looking up...!

Hmmmm.... good question - however it was  the fork brace which was invented to hold the front sliders aligned to improve handling and keep the fender tabs in good shape (of course riding modestly the brace is not needed...?).

USD's have something to do with attracting the chicks...  I can't recall who first mentioned that fact but I don't doubt it...!

Whatever you choose ride safe...

So, how do I get ready for the RPM Fall Rally...?

I replace the water main to the shop... :pardon:

They are replacing 5th Av outside of the shop door. That includes replacing the tap water main line, the sewer line, adding ADA sidewalks and bump out islands and I have been told a new 4 way stop sign at the corner when they are done. Construction is scheduled through late November. They have removed the roadway and the sidewalks around the shop. So, since the sidewalk is exposed and the water main was installed in the building when build new in the early 50's, I decided it was time to replace it. I dug out under the building about nine feet to access the point where it enter the building through the concrete floor. I pulled out the old galvanized pipe and have replaced it with new copper piping. I have to wait for the city to shut off their valve so I can replace the old gate valve on my side for a new ball valve.

The city has already replaced the sewer line from the old clay pipe to the green PVC you can see in the photos.

So, on a housekeeping note. Everyone needs to enter from the west to the front of the shop on I st. You cannot access the roll-up door unless you ride on the dirt road. We will bring everything in & out of the shop via the front door this year.

Once again this year, this is a BYB (Bring Your Booze) event. I will have ice chest available for you to use to chill.

I will be feeding everyone on Saturday night at the shop and will have tea, lemonade and water.

So, pardon the dust, because the place is covered in it this year due to the construction.

BTW, has anyone heard from LA Mike in years, or seen him at a rally..................???

Only a week away and we shall be gathering.

I will be at the shop Friday after lunch. Plan on heading out for dinner around 6pm for those who are present.

I'm loosing Robert for the weekend as he is going to Laguna Seca to be there for his brother.

This year we will be again riding Saturday with a lunch stop. Then back to the shop for dinner, fire and tales of the day.

Everyone ride safe getting here. Remember 5th st is torn up,  so you have to enter from I St to the shop.

Everyone is welcome to leave their bikes secured at the shop Friday and Saturday night if desired before the Sunday departure.

Seen you soon.

Dress super warm Fred..........We have a cold-front moving through Wyoming and Colorado this week.
They are calling for Snow, and a high temp of near 20-degrees F. for Thursday!
You are going to have a cold ride if you are planning on I-80.

The weather looks perfect for the Rally. The weather getting there and then returning is what I really look at. Here are a few screen shots of the forecasted weather and temps going the Southern route.

There may be some rain Wednesday morning leaving Wichita and then pretty good riding weather for the remainder of the day. The destination for Wednesday is Gallup, NM by late afternoon/early evening. A stop at a hotel for 5-6 hours of sleep. On the road by 1:00am. Pick up CutterBill in Mojave, CA and blaze into Oakdale by 6:00pm. The only stretch of COLD weather will be going through the Flagstaff area, but that will be early Thursday morning before the real cold sets in there.

All because the tree-huggers won't let them trim the trees... It looks like it's limited to places where the power lines are above ground. Brentwood has been spared. It's a nightmare at work, however. The chaos created by random power outages at FAA facilities across the state is madness. Glad I'm off for a few days. See you guys tomorrow!

Well,  the 2019 RPM fall rally ended early this morning as Frank and Fred both stopped by before their long journey home.

I immediately got tied up this morning and was not able to get a wrap up post done.

I will get one done next weekend.

But until then,  I want to thank everyone who attended this year as a great time was had by all.

The roads were great,  the gathering of like mind individuals was enjoyable and the plans are already in place for 2020.

Hell,  I was finally able to convince CapnRon of the benefits of one of the most popular mods for the FJ.

Stay tuned and I hope everyone has had or is having safe travels home.

On another note,  Ryan hurt the engine at Laguna this weekend. He was able to get in two sessions and came within just a second of the track recorded for a Miata. Unfortunately,  clear track was never achieved for a clean lap.

Lessons were learned and modifications are already slated to resolve the oil staravion issue that hurt the engine.

The car turned a bunch of heads and the fastest guys in attendance were impressed by the car.  One guy told Ryan,  "I haven't be passed by a single car all weekend, but you blew by me like I had my foot on the brake".

Being the Fastest Slow guy, I figured out a way to keep up with Randy.... it needs to get dark.... Randy having a tinted visor and me having burn your retina lighting, made keeping up with him easier.  :flag_of_truce:

Under normal riding conditions, I am still the slow guy ...  :sarcastic:

A great time was had. Definitely a Rally that needs to be on everyone's must attend list. Phenomenal weather, incredible roads, and awesome FJ owners to socialize with.

Frank highly pressed on me to detour into Yosemite National Park on the way out for my trip back to Kansas. Teaser photo. Half Dome way off in the background

Yep, that was fun! Good roads and good food (even if they forgot my orders!); but the best part was being able to put faces to names. Good company. And I didn't crash!  :good2:

I made it home after a boring but uneventful slog down the 99. Turned left at Bakersfield and then another hour. About 4 hours door-to-door but the cruise control made it a bit easier. Hopefully next year I will have one of my FJ's put together in time for the rally.  See you then...

2019 RPM Rally recap

This marks our 5th year of hosting the event and we have been honored to be able to do so.

I want to thank all who came to participate in the rally this year. Once again, we had two new faces at this years event. While Fred is not a new face to the group, he was a new face at the RPM rally. Thank you Fred for the trip out west to join. CutterBill was the other new face this year. While he participated on the Tenere, I imagine next year will be on his FJ.

Several people were not able to make it this year and you were missed; Pat, Joe, Kjell, Ryan, Mike A, LA Mike, Ed, Kerry, Steve C, Tim, Klav, Doug C & Bean...to mention a few.

As I have already mentioned, October 9-11, 2020 is already on the calendar for , so mark out that weekend right now...

Once again, the feedback on the ride was great, the Little Dragon never fails to provide great riding. The road up through Greeley Hill also, offers 95% of enjoyable twisties. Then, the ride down Priest Grade rounds out three phenomenal twisties available just a short trip away from the shop.

The first two photos this year are of the group photo from one of the stops. Not sure which on is better, no thumbs up or thumbs up...

As we prepared to head out on Saturday morning, here was the line up.

The total group lineup followed by everyone's bike individually.

Frank's Stormy
Bill's Tenere
Ian's Kawi
Travis' 1100
Andy's 86
Ramos' high mileage 93
Rick's low mileage 93
The RPM 93
Capn's 93
Fred's long distance 95
Monkey's 90
Ron's 90

There was an odd conversation overheard prior to the ride between Fred and Mike. I seem to recall Fred telling Mike...

Look man, I know you can ride for 1000's of mile in one sitting, but how in the hell is my beard more grey than yours?

Do you use Just for Men or what?

The later in the evening, I heard Ron asking Mike the same question as Fred earlier in the day.

By Ron's expression, he cannot believe the answer...

As we got the to top of the Little Dragon, there were a couple of bikes there. There was one guy with a foreign accent who says, "How about that, we met you guys up here last year too". He again this year, took a few minutes to check out the FJ's and is still in disbelief that there are this many local FJ's.

Mark and Craig's FJ are now added in the line up photo.

Andy is rolling camera for what should be another great video of the event.

Once again, the photo from the top looking back down doesn't do the road justice. The camera just can't catch all of the road visible on the other side of the lake.

I did not get any lunch stop photos, but it was unfortunate Pat wasn't with us. 3/4 of the FJowners forum administrators were seated at one table. Mark, Fred and I sat with Cutterbill.

At the recommendation, a new file section has been created and will be built and populated shortly. Keep your eyes open for the new, "Electrical" file for all electrical related files.

After lunch we headed out and further east up Greeley Hill Rd. There was a fork in the road and the tail section of the group took the right and got a little off course. But, the error was noted early and they didn't get too far down the road.

Once we got back to Highway 120 we began the trip back west to the shop. The spirited ride down priest grade with the final stop just after. This is where, as Travis already mentioned, the EPA caught up with us. They had been chasing us since we had lunch. There was a report that someone from the eastbay (Rick) had concealed and was trying to smuggle in plastic straws to Bay Area residents.

As you can see in this photo, Rick is the only person missing as he is being strip searched looking for the illegal plastic straws.

Here a few photos from dinner and it is amazing how quiet it gets when the food hits the table...

In the first photo the only one talking is the UK transplant. He is asking...

How do you guys hold this pizza food, this is nothing like the Sheppard's pie I'm so used too.

Then as I turn the camera, Bill says, "nope you are not going to get a picture of me shoving food in my face like you did with everyone else..."

As dinner concludes, the stories are getting deep. Travis then breaks out into song. He starts singing, Take it easy (https://youtu.be/00ySZOPPDD4?t=60).

Check out those reactions as he gets into the corus.

Ian: Sing it dad
Rick: Wow, he can really hold that note
Mark: I didn't know we were having a show this year
Ron: I waiting to hear the hook so I can jump in.
Andy: USA is so much better the the UK
Fred: I putting Winslow Az in my google maps right now.

Frank, Craig and Mark are getting up to start dancing.

Bill, Ron and Mike are down at the end of the table saying, these damn kids.

Mark is asking Bill, are you going to get up and dance?

As Travis concludes the performance, Ron begins to think...

I really hope Andy doesn't have the bunny ears up behind my head like I did to Fred earlier.

That's the point Fred realizes he was had earlier in the day by Ron.

Ian is thinking, I think I might have been a little off key tonight and will have to work on it for next year. Rick is licking his chops in anticipation for next year.

As Ian stands up for his bow to the audience, Mark sure seems to have enjoyed the performance, off key or not.
But, Ron on the other hand is now grilling Fred..."Did you tell Andy to put the bunny ears up behind my head...?"

Even though the music has stopped, Craig just can't seem to stop dancing and is moving so fast I can't even focus on him...

We then move outside for the annual campfire. While we all love the digital campfire the forum provides, you just can't beat the real thing...

Thank you again to Mark for the instant start to the fire with the thermite. This year the set-up allowed for one of the funniest moments of the rally...right Andy?

As the thermite was fist lit, Ol' Monkey thought...I'm not sure about this new bigger skull this year. I better keep my back to the start of the fire.

Then after the mag strip burned out and it didn't light, he figured he better watch to make sure it works the second time.

See, Bill gets it. Yeah the digital campfire is great, but the real this is so much better.

As we were warmed by heart and soul of the fire, reflections of the day, week, year and lifetimes were had.

It is just a great time to be with friends of a common core, the Yamaha FJ motorcycle.

Once again, thank you all for attending again this year.

These types of events cannot happen without your participation. I know these event cost money to attend and many of you attend from great distances. I hope you all enjoy these gatherings bring you as much enjoyment as they bring to me. I look forward to next year and many more to come. I hope you are all able to join us again next year.

R.P.M. Rally – 2019

It was another great time and it was good to see all the "usual suspects" once again.

Of Note:  When describing a previous incident when on tour with FireHawk Alan, old Captain Ron impressed upon us the importance of ATGATT – although his riding gear was shredded he was able to walk away, albeit with a limp, after colliding with a deer while traveling at a confirmed 80 mph!  Seems impossible yet even the responding LEO complimented & thanked the captain for wearing good gear...

Good to see the gentleman from Oregon and the Sacramento crew as well.  Reno was well represented with Travis & Ian attending.

Thanks to Monkey for the fireworks!  Whoever yelled as he was lighting the fire should be arrested for disturbing (at least temporarily) the tranquility of the gathering!

Kansas is a long way from California so special thanks to Fred for attending & gathering up Cutter Bill on his way in.

Those two fellows from across the way on the other side of the Altamont deserve a special mention – from clown cars to the best pass of the day [all the while worrying about Andyoutandabout riding after dark], all bases were covered.

Speaking of Mr. French, great video & editing; seems as if some of those guys could use a camera with a lens filter...?!

Although Robert did not ride, he was available Friday to lend a hand with the preparations; especially helpful manning the metal detector screening for weapons & unauthorized utensils, in addition to adjusting the suspensions & ensuring all attendees used only the correct type of oil.

Also kind regards to Mrs. R as somewhere along the way I heard that Randy's better half helped prepare the cheese plates, dips and appetizers & other hors d'oeuvre...  many thanks!

Finally thanks to Randy for hosting another great Rally!  It's a big commitment in time & providing Saturday's dinner was a bonus!

Ride safe & ATGATT
