As I have just fitted the YZF rim I would be interested to hear of what size and profile tires people are running. 160/60-17 seems the better option. Any one running a 180/55-17 How does it feel?
cheers
Richard
From my understanding, most FJ owners that have used a 17" x 5" rear wheel use a 170/60-17 tire. Country Joe (Joseph Berk) installed a 180/55-17 Dunlop Roadsmart III on his 5" wheel during last years Central FJ Rally. He has told me that the tire works perfectly on the 5" wheel.

I'm running a Bridgestone BT 023 in the 170/60 size on my 5"YZF wheel, and I find the whole bike steers and turns so much more progressively with the matched pair of Bridgestones than it has with any previous 16" rear tyre (either in 150/80 or 160/80 tyre size) - but a big difference for me would also likely be the change from crossyply (bias poly) tyres to my first proper radial tyre on the FJ (I ran matching Bridgestone BT45 crossplies for a long time) and also my switch to the 3.5" FZR front wheel
I'd be certain that a 180/55 wouldn't pose any specific problems mounted on a 5" width rim (as long as it doesn't rub on the chain) and might just try one when my current rear tyre is worn out - as Pat says, a fat 180 on the rear gets the chicks

No, no...what he said was, "A 180 on the rear gets the fat chicks."
:negative:
Wrong end fellas....
180/55 is perfect.
The first 17" conversion on my '84 was the Jon Cain 5" YZF600 rim and the 170/60 tire was a very very good match for that rim. I never tried a 180/55 on a 5" rim.
It's was only when I went to the T-Ace 5.5" rear that I went to the 180.
