Congrats on your new FJ, welcome to our family.
Unfortunately the answer is No.  The later model FJ shocks are too short.

I do know that 84/85's FJ are the same, I am unsure about '86/87 being compatable with the 36Y '84s. (help?) I do know that '89+ FJ's have the shorter bodied shock.

If you like the bike, then it's a perfect time for a new Penske shock. That's my recommendation.

The factory Yamaha FJ shocks were weak the moment they left the factory and over time have only gotten worse. They are not rebuildable. Why spend $ and buy another oem weak ass shock?

Cheers and welcome again!

Welcome Neil,

+2 on the Penske rear shock... adjustable ride height and smooth as butter on bacon while riding.

if you have the means i highly recommend picking one up

Kookaloo!

3cv wont fit, different bottom mount, a 1tx should fit, penske ones are harder to get over here hagon a good bet, good value for money and
they have a good aftermarket service so will rebuild knackered ones cheaply, come up on ebay sometimes, its worth trying a guy called audibeck on ebay as he has lots of bits lying around.

Hi If you're in the UK, the FJOC should be an easy option.

Hey Neil, there is a very nice Wilbers shock on e-bay germany. [wilbers federbein] It fits your model. You should find out if he ships to the UK. It is up to 180 Euro. 13 hours left. They are worth there money. greetings from CA Werner

When I bought my '89 3CV in 2002 one of the first things I did was junk the junk OE shock. Thought I was being clever by buying a cheap (Betor) replacement. It was actually fine for about 8 months until I hit a small pothole and it collapsed completely and spectacularly. Replaced it with a Hagon which has been, and still is great. Recommended.
