I had to pull the headers on my new yellow fj1100 to change the oil.The previous owner put enough silicone on to seal all the windows in my house.I guess he couldn't afford new gaskets.

Unless my eyes are deceiving me. At least the No.1 exhaust port appears to have a gasket installed. Or maybe that is an imprint from the gasket and the gasket came off with the head pipe.

Fred. Your eyes are not deceiving you.under all of that silicone were exhaust gaskets.The gaskets were so smashed they extruded past the edge of the exhaust port.I give the previous owner the benefit of the doubt that he was aware that silicone wasn't needed unless he was too cheap or rushed to install new gaskets.
Speaking of exhaust gaskest.. Soon im going to install these and wonder what is the best way to do it.
1 To install them with or without exhaust paste ?
2 To install them now before i put the engine together?
3 To install them when engine is back in bike and right before installing the headers so that the exhaust paste is still soft ?
I clean the area with some scotch brite. The new gaskets should fit in with just enough resistance to hold them in place while the exhaust is fitted. Hand tighten the header nuts to hold everything in place then tighten them to spec. Go over everything a couple of times as the gaskets will relax as they get compressed.
I just tested now the head is cleaned up with wirebrush earlier, the gasket falls out so i guess i have to use some exhaust paste.I did replace exhaustgaskets on another bike ages ago but then i think the gaskets was made of hollow copper rings

Do what mechanics have done forever, squeeze the gasket just slightly out of round, when you push it in it will stay there. When I say slight, I mean slight, that's all it takes.

This is what I always do when replacing mine!
I have never used any kind of sealer or paste on these. Just a very slight squeeze (like Noel said, very slight) and they fit just snugly in the round recess to hold them in place while you assemble the exhaust.
I have never had any exhaust leaks doing it this way............. :good2:
Or, use a couple of dabs of grease to hold them in during assembly. The grease will burn off quickly.
Many good sugestions i did the ovalshape trix and it worked out perfect.Also i did not try to fit the gasket good enough first time i did not put it deep to the bottom of the hole witch has smaller diameter.
