Title: What caused this?
Post by: Tuned forks on November 16, 2018, 07:30:15 PM
Today I used the FJ for a couple neighborhood errands. On the way home I noticed my right instrument display is crooked.  Anyone with cluster experience, (Rick, I'm looking at you ) know what might have broken to cause that tilt?

Crap!  It's not sideways.  I don't know why the pic loaded that way.  Sorry dudes.

Fixed the photo....

I would say the screws that hold the gauge fell out.

the clock is mounted on a small pc board held on by two screws. either one fell out or the board broke

It appears to me that the clock has stayed in place and the gauge has rotated to the left.

Fred, I think that is a correct assumption.  The clock seems to have the proper orientation and the fuel gauge seems to have rotated.  Since I've never been in there, I don't have knowledge of what holds stuff together.  Perhaps this might accelerate my ZOA NOM shift indicator mod.

The left hand screw is clearly missing. The gauge face rotated to the left.

When you're ready for the gear indicator mod, let me know. I have extra LED's and wiring you can have.

Dang Rick you're right.  Now that I look at the larger format of the pic in the forum, (as opposed to my cell), I can see where the screw used to be and is now reposing near the E of the fuel gauge.  That'll be fun to take apart.

It is not that difficult. The fairing can stay on. Remove the windscreen, Air scoops, left/right black infill panels and the black instrument shroud. The gauge cluster has a bolt near each of the turn signal buckets. Pops right out and disconnect 2 connectors.

Remove the 5 screws that hold the clear lens on, the black bezel is able to come off. The gauges are now exposed. Be mindful of the idiot light lenses, they can pop off. You don't want to lose one as they are NOT available individually. The screws that hold on the fuel gauge come in from the back side of the White housing.

Thanks Fred.  Looks like a project for after Thanksgiving.

It's a 20 minute project if you do it in the right order. The worst part of the whole thing is getting the set screw out of the choke knob.
