Title: Bermagui FJ Shed Weekend
Post by: oldktmdude on October 18, 2018, 04:42:39 AM
Alf and I are holding another FJ Shed Weekend, December 7th, 8th and 9th. As per usual, first in with bed requests will receive. We have bedding
for 7 plus plenty of room for swags and tents. If planning to attend lease let us know of bed requirements and of any planned FJ maintenance so we can make arrangements to plan accordingly.
Hope to see the usual suspects plus others that may not have been previously.
   Regards, Pete. :drinks: :good2:

Excellent stuff Pete, put my name down. With each passing year your manshed day becomes more and more of a fixture on the FJ social calender and you and Alf do such a great job of it. No compromise on the route that time of the year, can't wait.
For anyone interested, Pete and Alf live in Bermagui, aka God's own country (and coast and roads and weather and beer and ......)

Friday arvo on the way to last manshed, just South of Pete and Alf's place.

I would have liked to join you all but on 7/12 I'll onboard ship headed north. Perhaps another/next time.

Hi Pete

You can put me down as well.
I have purchased 4 x 117.5 and 4 x 120 (just in case) main jets, as well as 4 x 42.5 pilot jets, so we can fit these.
The only other thing I feel my bike is due for, is a rear swing arm pivot point and rear shock mounting point inspection.
I can get the Friday off work so a two night stay is assured but, I may be able to get the Thursday off as well.
A bed would be nice but I can bring my swag no problems.
Now all that is left, are some detailed directions on the back route you informed me about from Goulburn.

Which days will you attend and what is your preferred route.
I have planed for a definite departure on the Friday but possibly Thursday, route via Braidwood and Kings Hwy.

There is a good possibility that It looks like Thursday morning and following you down, if I can keep up...
Unless you want to head out to Bathurst via Tarana and down thru Crookwell via Tuena and Binda to Goulburn but that might require another day to get down there but maybe that's another day.

Unfortunately, Thursday is a no go for me. I forgot, Dentist appointment.
So, it is an EARLY Friday morning departure for me.

Just doing the maths. Pencil me in as a maybe, if you still have mattress available. It's 1150km, big day  ut could do it as an Iron butt ride. Would be a late Friday arrival.

That's a big day through that country Mark (unless you're really good at early starts) Worth it though, it's a great weekend.

For a young bloke like you Mark, that's an easy ride. I came back from Armidale in 11 hours via the scenic route, it was a big day, 1,100kms in 11 hrs but a great ride.
   See you next month.

Hi Pete

There are a lot of things that have to fall into place before i am a definite. But I will give it a red hot go. Might even try to start out on the Thursday. Keen to go after my last few failed attempts to go on a decent ride. Lack of money, time and poor health (hurt my back - still coming good)  didnt help.

Great stuff Mark!

Pete not only knows the routes like the back of his hand, I think RMS used his hand for the map!

Same as Phil said, if you need a bed on the way down, you are most welcome. I'm heading down on the Friday.

Phil what day are you going? I was thinking of going via Nerriga & then down the Clyde.

Johno are you confirmed?

That's excellent Mark, you might want to take Phil or Troy up on their offer of accomodation, lots of roos down that way and you've got 2 days either side of the weekend off.

Giving it serious thought Noel. My lights arent suited to after dark activities anyway. Tried it once heading the the Mapleton Muster. Bad lights in unfamiliar territory is not something I would recommoend to anyone. :negative:

I've done 1000's of unplanned night km's with just the FJ headlight and it sucks. Riding the last 200km from the NW into Waikerie SA at night was the last straw. I could see waaaay better with light off!

Riding at night in Oz is hazardous enough, doing it with a terrible headlight stacks the odds against you even further. Besides, the bar opens early on Friday.

Pete, I am firming as a definite (upgraded from a maybe). I have received all the appropriate approvals.  :yahoo:
I will be leaving up here on the Thursday, so I won't be a late arrival on the Friday now. I am a bit allergic to riding in the dark in roo Central.

So next is, do I need to bring my swag, or is there a sleeping spot for me.

G'day Mark, sorry about the late reply mate but I've just spent the last 7 days riding around the Victorian and NSW high country. I don't need to tell you how good it was as I reckon the secret is already out. Easily the best roads in the country.
Don't need to bring your swag along, we have a bed for you. Some of the regular attendees haven't responded yet so first in gets the beds.
Looking forward to seeing you and showing you how good this end of the coast is.

Alan, the weather's always fantastic down here. Just bring a pair of shorts, tee shirt and a pair of thongs (the type you wear on your feet) and all will be good.
We do, however get the occasional storm at this time of year so bring the rain gear just in case. No need for sleeping gear as beds are available.
See you in two and a half weeks.

Not yet.
I met with Troy last weekend at our final F3A comp and he informed me that he may meet up with us at Tarago.
He would probably come through Nerriga, then Galen Rd, Sandy Point Rd, Cullulla Rd to Tarago, I'm not sure but, it could be a good route for us.
I shall do some (low level) flight planning.
I will attempt to send you a .gpx of my proposed route.
Basically the standard route through Picton, old Hume Hwy to MossVale, a little on the Motor Way (sorry) then Braidwood Rd to Braidwood then Kings Hwy to Pet's is what I have at the moment.
Will try to do better.

Alan, if you and Gavin are heading down on Friday, you are a bit limited on choices. The routes I talked to Gavin about at Troy's shed day are a fair bit longer and would involve more than one days' ride. The route Troy has suggested is a good one, my advice is to stay away from the coast road for along as possible, especially on a Friday afternoon. Once you are south of Batemans Bay, you will almost have the road to yourselves.
See you soon, regards, Pete. :good2:

I'm sure the first time I just 'happened' to meet Dave he was riding it back from the Putty with his son.
I was filling up at Wilberforce and he passed and came back.

When Dave was riding the "diesel" bike he had to stop at every fuel station he came to. He could only do 200km's between fuel stops or he would run out of fuel. The bike was blowing a shit load of black smoke hence the nick name "Diesel Dave"

One of the greatly anticipated highlights of Pete & Alf's and Troy's manshed weekends for me is the ride through the Vic High Country and NSW snowfields in Spring/Summer.
It is always a bit of a novelty seeing the remnants of the Winter snow on the ridges in the distance only 3 weeks before Christmas. In Australia we don't associate snow and Summer together.
This was Falls Creek today.

According to Base Camp, it will take Alan and I approx three hours to Nowra Airport via Kangaroo Valley so, an 8:30 departure from your place should see you at Nowra Airport around 8:34
Maybe this would be a good place to meet around about 09:00.

Getting all excited. Less than 24 hours till I start my way down. To make it more interesting I have signed up with the Aussie Hard Arse Assosiation Challange ( Similar to the Iron Butt Challange) and I am hoping to do two challanges. You have to work up to the big rides in stages (it's the rules. 600km, 800km, 1000km and so on) Planning on the 600 km ride on the way down to meet up with David Moore and will be taking the New England Highway. Will try the 800km on the return journey.

The bike is all prepped, just had an oil change, tyres are in good nick chain adjusted and lubed up. Not much more to do but pack my gear and head off.

Looking forward to the therapy. :drinks:

We'll dedicate a bit of time to planning a 1,100 km route home for you. I know of some great roads to help you do it. Most of the roads I'm thinking of will see you average around 140km/h. Great scenery and the km's just fly by.
Have a great and safe trip.

The bike is all prepped, just had an oil change, tyres are in good nick chain adjusted and lubed up. Not much more to do but pack my gear and head off.

Mark

Me too, it is one of my favourite weekends of the year and one of my favourite rides and I'll be on the road in less than 8 hours.

You are ahead of me on bike prep, the FJ has just come back from a trip last weekend and is need of some R&R, it will have to sit this one out, finding spare time this close to Christmas is near impossible, I'm doing well to even get away and will need to come home in one day on Sunday.

Looking forward to meeting a few new faces and catching up with some old ones.

Noel

Have a good time everyone, sorry I can't make it. For the new year I'll keep in mind Troy's suggestion of a Shed Day (By The Lake) at my joint.
Dang, that means I'd have to clean up the garage.

Noel, I hope you have enough puncture repair plugs buddy  :sarcastic:. That Beemer loves 'em. Stay upright mate!

Mark, be seeing you real soon. You might want to stay ahead of Diesel, just sayin'.
Dave & Diesel, keep the alternator attached & the oil up  :sarcastic:. I've run out of drill bits & the easy-outs are still new.....

Al & Gav, see you tomorrow. With the early departure, keep a mind on Skippy. It has been breezy this way today so there will be heaps of leaves bark and other crud on the corners. I'll be the Storm Trooper at Albatross in a cloud of smoke.

Pete, is there enough ice in Bermie for our beer? We might need your '1100' to do a few high speed passes to keep things cool.

Everyone else take care and see you there :yahoo:!

Troyskie
(Yes I plan on visiting my corner on the way to lunch  :wacko2:)

Ha, I have the seven plugs covered but I'm not carrying a spare tyre. Let's hope the roads treat me a little more kindly this year.

Speaking of roads treating you kindly.........

Troy, the one thing we have plenty of at Bermi is ice for beer. Not so sure about tyre plugs but I'm sure Noel will have that covered.
Have a safe and enjoyable ride all, see you tomorrow.

Photos to follow.

Pete, Alf, Gail & Steve put on a great weekend yet again. Thanks very much for hosting us.

It turned into a bit of a carbie tweak and tune weekend. Thanks to Phil for his Colour Tune plug work.

Pete dismantling and reassembling a number of carb banks.

Noel, you are a true gentleman! Great to catch up. Get home safe mate, a long ride today.

Mark, I think you get the long ride to join up. Let's hope that Sparkles doesn't loose her spark on the way home to Dave's place (Pete's joke!).

Dave, great to catch up and I trust you and Mark will get home safe, miss the storms, and dodge the Sydney Sunday traffic.

Gav, Al, Diesel, Johno, tops to spend some time with you all.

Some of the best roads south of Bermie, a must for those that haven't visited :good2: :good2:

Pete and Alf. Wow, excellent weekend. Thank you for you hospitality. You guys are too tour guides and the roads were unbelievable.  Pete thanks you you wiring repairs (the bike threw up a bad connection on the way home his morning) the odometer says that I have done 2690km in the last 5 days and my old body is feeling it. We might have to change it from a shed day to a rally though. 10 FJs (6 of which were ambulances) is an awesome turnout.
Thanks for having me as your guest.

Yep, they get better each year. Big thanks to Alf and Gail, again, for hosting the weekend and on this occasion, having me as a house guest. It was great having a drink and relaxing without the prospect of riding 'home' in the middle of the night. They could not have made we lodgers feel more welcome.
While the ride is always fun, it's the people that make it great, what a great bunch of guys (Gail's an honorary guy)

Pete mentioned he and Alf have been wearing the sides of their tyres out before the centre recently......

Just South of Bermagui

....when this is what you have to ride to get to the good stuff, I'm not surprised.

Bermagui is a beautiful spot and I have done ride reports and photos of it many times before. I was lucky enough this time to ride Bermagui - Merimbula 4 times, on each occasion in next to no traffic.

They breed 'em tough there. No chlorinated, heated, indoor pools for them, this is the local pool.

I got my dirt fix detouring to Guthega ski resort on the way back from Charlotte Pass...

Turning inland from the coast on the way home, the humidity very quickly became stifling.

I could feel the under growth attaching itself to my boots and bike in the time it took to take this photo.

Steve and Alf on hearing a BMW had been seen at the tail end of the group.

Dave having a word to the boys about what to do about it.

I retraced the two day ride up back home in one day, just on a 1000 km's of fabulous, empty roads. Many times thoughout the day I thought there just has to be a law against having this much fun, I looked at the speedo and realised there was. It's funny how after a few consecutive days on the road you start to kid yourself that the cops will understand.

Awsome, awesome time it would have been for everyone, will get there one year!

Bugger Noel. Yep, this is what is so ridiculous, ok the LAW might say this lovely open road is signposted at 100kmh, but for someone very experienced on a modern bike or car who is not doing anything stupid, they still write the ticket. No commonsense by cops these days, just bring in more dollars. Bozo and I copped the same thing out Boonah way earlier this year, cop talked to us like we were 18 year old boy racers, when we were just sedately cruising looking at the scenery.  :dash2:

Sorry for the delay in posting a reply.
Firstly, a huge thanks to Gail and Alf for inviting me into their home. It was simply awesome.
The day started with meeting Alan at Casula, then via Razorback and Range Road
(Range Road is nice diverson close to Bowral)

https://youtu.be/b7qNTfF3LA8

Then through Kangaroo Valley

https://youtu.be/TNmeSW8L9uI

That night, with the help of Pete, we replaced the main jets in my carbs and moved the needle clip.
We also did a colour tune with the aid of Phil's Color Tune Plug.

Saturday saw a ride to Windham for lunch and return.

I had a little excitement,

https://youtu.be/1SDBNqC6a3Q

and took a wrong (no) turn.

https://youtu.be/2_Rl-Nl-57M

Sunday saw a leasurly ride home mainly along the Hwy, stopping at Antons for breakfast and coffee at the By the Beach Cafe near Batemans Bay.
Great to catch with all the guys and can not wait for the March Rally.

Gavin

Gavin, good footage mate, thanks for sharing them. I must apologise for Mark and your "no turn" moment as I should have stayed
or appointed a corner man on that turn off. Sorry fella's, it never even occurred to me.
Your "oops" moment is not the first FJ I've seen miss that corner. (he shall remain anonymous but it wasn't me) That's a tricky piece of road
unless you know it and even after doing it dozens of times, it can still catch you out.
Thanks for attending and adding to a great and memorable weekend.
   Regards, Pete.   :good2:
