So Sunday I fueled up ive developed a horrible vibration while cruising.under hard acceleration its not thier at slow speeds it's not thier at 55/65 when i pull in the clutch and rev the engine.only at cruising
The vibration builds also as I get at 45mph transition to 55 mph its very noticeable and it'll follow speed increase.
I had a new tire put on Saturday.Sunday morni g I increased the my rear spring to to make the rear a little stiffer
Problem solving 101... What changes were made/done just before the problem started? A wheel out of balance will feel more out of balance the faster you spin it. I would check that first.
When I pull the clutch its gone tho
Drive train related.too loose of a chain?
I had this same issue Mike, any time i got above 65, i would develop a really bad vibration and lugging. I got both tires replaced, and rebalanced, and the issue is totally gone, all the way up to 105( as fast as ive tried). Try that first, and then if its still there, i would lean towards maybe a chain issue, like the vibration of the engine is causing swinging? thats just a guess in the dark though
Stiff chain link is my guess.
If I figure out the issue ill post.I'm to busy to mess with her.

So you bought it and the vibration started.... Where to start?
So today I got free time and reolaced the steering bearings.I also changed oil switched to 15/40 Estella.I lubed my chain and adjusted lacked.I couldnt ride it up to speed 55/65 mph as rain was headed my way felt great at 45mph.I'm suspecting a rear wheel bearing.
My swing arm bushings are well over due.I'm gonna order them tomorrow
Mike, FYI, the 84/85 swingers had nylon bushings which are no longer available.
You are lucky, on your '86 swinger linkage you have needle bearings, which are still available from Yamaha.
Thanks pat.I'm sure rpm will have what I need.ive never takin off or serviced my swing arm.I dont understand why yamaha made the sterring head that way.I used my welder and welded a 1/4 bolt to the races.
Hey Pat
The swing arm on my 84 had needle bearings (yes it was the original item).
Maybe your swing arm isnt oem as senior members knowledge is holy grail.partzilla shows a 84 as have g needle bearings

Are You Absolutely Sure its the Only thing then..
For memory when I had my 84 apart this year for greasing of all linkages and replacement of bearings,
Swing Arm are Needle but Linkages are Nylon.

Just so we are singing the same song.... I'm talking about the '84/85 swing arm linkage.

^^^^ See parts #10 #15 and #21 Sure Looks like nylon bushings to me.
I've owned my '84 for a few years now, so I'm not dreaming this shit up.
Most of the Japanese bikes manufactured in the 70's and early 80's came with nylon swing arm bushings. I replaced the nylon bushings on my 1981 Yamaha XS650 with bronze ones from an aftermarket supplier. Does anyone make bronze replacement bushings for the early FJ's?
Dave
Don't know about brass replacements Dave.
Someone posted last week something about using needle bearings out of a Kawasaki or Honda as a retrofit for the Yamaha nylon bushings....
....Or just buy the linkage off a '86/87
Could be my mistake. Not enough sleep and misreading your post. I know I had pin bearings as they ended up on my shed floor. But were from the main pivot point.it was 3 years and many other mods ago.
Mark
No worries Mark! All good..
I would like to do a write up on what to use for replacing the nylon bushings for the 84/85 folks.
Those bushings ain't getting any younger.
I wasnt on the same page I think the shock linkage is what your refering to
If I can get an old set of bearings I can see if the sizes are available from my bearing supplier. They have composite bearings that are better than the old Nylon ones of old. Anyone have a set I can borrow?
I've long thought bushes (not nylon) would work much better here than needle rollers, like king pin bushes and for the same reason.
One of the problems is that the swing arm only rotates through a few degrees and as such leads to this sort of damage.

Did they balance the wheel? first i would check if there are some new weights on the rim if not they didn't.I have heard people saying that its not necessary to balance a motorcycle wheel that's bullshit!.
You can easily balance the wheel yourself just take it off run the axlebolt Thru and hang it between 2 carstands or chairs hanging on the axle ends (it also helps if you have some old wheelbearings on the axle ).Then you rotate the wheel slowly and se if it have a heavy point .Then if it has you add balance weights on the opposite side (upper side) until its gone.Mayby a bad explanation but google it ...
I have had bad vibrations at higher speed that was caused by unbalanced wheel.
As I orderd my swing arm bushing from rpm along with the brass bushing in the clutch handle assembly.I've dicoverd my vibration was from my #4 carb pilot jet had what I think is a piece of rubber from my fuel line in it.all's good
