Title: Tachometer repair
Post by: chrism40 on July 10, 2018, 07:26:44 AM
Does anyone know of a place that can repair a FJ tach? A voltage spike fried mine. I had a replacement stock, but I would like to get the original repaired for inventory.

Thanks for any help.

I met a guy at the 24 Hours of Daytona by the name of Gentry Zentmeyer. His company, named AutoInstruments.com repairs gauges, however you may need to contact them as I am not sure if they do motorcycle gauges.

New aftermarket can be found at Speedhut. I have not used them but others here have installed their product.

The speed Hut gauges in the default settings closely resemble the OEM gauges. They are stepper motor controlled and have a lifetime warranty.

At $140.00USD, the price is reasonable. Here is a link to the exact gauge that I recommend. The gauges are customizable. For the OEM look, change the face to black, the bezel to Legacy Black, change the center disc to black, and in the gauge notes, put a request to add a red background in the tick area from 9500 to 12,000 rpms.

I would second  replacement. If you have the funds forget playing around with 30 year old gauges.
Fred your write up and urban legends made the install very easy. If I had to do it again I could have been
even neater with the connection's. their was lots of room to do it all inside the housing and keep it very clean looking.
I mounted the GPS sender inside on the back my fairing to the left of the headlight to keep it nice and clean.
I've even ridden longer just to come home in the dark because I love the look at night . wife thinks I was working later. :yahoo:

couple of months ago an intermittent whirring sound had me concerned only to realize it was the speedo. With little confidence it would help...I replaced the cable, whirring gone and the speedo functioned best it had in years, pretty stable. I'm a genius. Yesterdays commute... speedo went bonkers. Needle swinging crazy fast. Wish I had camera as it settled on 165MPH as I was splitting lanes on the 210.
Seems going to aftermarket units is wise. I wanted to get feel of just how plug and play the speedhut units are. There's a reference to a write up in Urban Legends. Would there be site address for that. Maybe copy could be PMed to me or posted in this thread. Much appreciated if it could. Any others thoughts on meter replacements? The speed huts look pretty cool.  Repairing old one is not off the table, if it can be fixed.
Of concern to is why the speedo went bad. If just bad meter that's good, piece of crap only last 32 years. I would not want to install new speedo to find the "sending unit" on the front wheel could break it. Any experiences on that question? Been slowly accumulating parts for a front end conversion (yes Pat still on my radar ). Already have new speedo drive for conversion I will do some day.  I could live with out speedo for a while too.
Stuck at 76,804 miles,
Mike

Hey Mike, box up the cluster and send it here: http://www.foreignspeedoinc.com/ (http://www.foreignspeedoinc.com/)

They do excellent work. Cost for a rebuild ~$120  The speedo will last another 30 years.

Stuck at 76,804 miles,I had the same problem with my speedometer and after oiling the cable didnt fix it i pulled the speedometer out of the cluster it only takes two screws .the only part that needed lubricating is the the rotating part the cable slips into. i dribbled a little chain lube grease in and now my speedometer is steadier than it is have ever been.
