I had a chain break on me last night. The joining link failed. Brand new EK chain. Was taking off from a stop and got about 50' and motor wound out and nothing but a shower of oil while I coasted about 100 yards. Bent the shit out of the clutch push rod and broke the cover. Very lucky here tho cause it doesn't appear to have actually broken the case. I'm digging in now. Just not sure what damage has been done behind the push rod. Thankfully I wasn't going fast or around a bend or both. Cause I'd probably be more concerned other things right now. Or with nothing at all..
You absolutely can not use a "clip" master link on an FJ. As you have discovered, the engine will pull them apart. You MUST use a riveted master link.

It was the rivet type. The tool I got off Amazon and it didn't do its job. It was cheap. That's what get. Hopefully I can put a new rod and seal and things will be ok.
I do all my own Maintenance on my 3 FJ Bikes,,,I have rebuilt Carbs X 3 . Strip and rebuilt 2 FJ Bikes , Fitted Motors etc etc ,etc , THE ONE THING that I will not do is "Rivet my Chains" , what I do is fit my 2 new sprockets ,,then I ride the Bike 30 klms (using my old Chain) ,,to get to the local Bike Shop so they can fit my new Chain and fit the "Rivet Link" with their great knowledge and using their top class Tools ,,Its the Best $30 you can spend ,,IMO
You can not blame the tool from Amazon. There are clear instructions, when fitting a master link, about how much you must expand the rivet link pins.
They should be measured by either a pair of vernier calipers or a micrometer. I am sorry you have found out the hard way about doing the job properly.
Sad to read about your chainsnap, but you was lucky after all.What was wrong with the tool? did it not expand the rivet enough? can you post a pick of the rivetlink?
I have just replaced my chain d.i.d 530 zvm-x with a cheap very low quality ebay tool wich almost couldnt do the job .and it would be interested in see your masterlink.

The master link is gone. I was lucky enough to retrieve my new chain off the road tho. I didn't use the master link that came with the new chain. I had a new rivet type link lying around that I got off Amazon a couple years ago. I wanted to practice with the tool I got on it to see how well it worked. My intentions were to ride to a bike shop and have them break that link off and install the one that came with the new chain. Unfortunately the shop wasn't open as expected and this occurred on the way home. I wasn't satisfied with the job the tool did. It didn't mushroom the ends enough, but I was confident it would get me to where I needed. To be honest I'm not entirely sure it was the rivet that failed. May have been the link itself, but all this is a lesson learned with the most fortunate outcome. And this time I'll just purchase a legit tool and spend the dough and buy enough links from the manufacturer of the same chain until I feel I'm a pro at it.... Oh yeah, I gotta fix the bike before all that :Facepalm:.. Lol
And while you're at it, clean that dirty engine. :bad:
How many miles(or km) after the new chain did it snap? I just put on a new chain as well, although unfortunately, mine did a little more damage than yours when it broke. Glad to hear all is well, and hopefully its an easy fix!!
