Title: FJ1200 vs Z900RS
Post by: FJ1200W on May 24, 2018, 03:16:00 PM
When I worked for a local dealership, I was thrilled to be able to set up the 1st Z900RS in this area. #1236.

The gentleman that bought it has done a few mods. Lowered, non-cat header, PCV w/dyno tune, mild stuff.

We were able to ride the bikes side by side a few days ago.

I was not about to catch and pass the Z900RS, somewhat surprising, but it should not of been I guess.

He dyno'ed at 108HP at the rear wheel, his bike weighs more than a hundred pounds less and he probably close to the same from me.

I'm not sure I could not of taken him on the top end, we just did not have enough room on that day.

Now I'm thinking about pulling the upper end off the 1314 FJ1100 I have sitting around and putting it on my FJ1200........

Not surprising at all,

For top end performance (not factoring in torque)
Zed comes in at 108 rwhp/450 lbs. = 4.16 lbs per hp.

Assuming your '89 is healthy you should be ~110 rwhp so 110/550 = 4.8 lbs per hp. Advantage Zed.
Getting a healthy 1314 should get you around 130 rwhp (or more) and should get you in the range of 4.2 lbs per hp.

Although, hp is not the whole story. Above 100 mph you have to factor in the Coefficient of Drag. That naked Zed has a serious disadvantage.

Above 110 on your way to 140+ you and your FJ will run away from the Zed.

Still....Those Z900RS are sure pretty bikes.  Kudos to Kawasaki.

Zed's are dime a dozen. You have a classic.

I've always been an Eddie Lawson fan.  The new Eddie replica version of this bike is a real looker.

Hey Steve, what was the guy's reasoning on lowering the Zed? What did he do?

I've read about the stock rwhp dyno measured to be 94 (MCN) to 99 (Roadracing World) so it looks like a 10-15 rwhp bump with the header and retune. Sounds about right.

The weight savings is frosting on the cake.
