Title: Slipping clutch
Post by: Coronet on April 06, 2010, 12:20:23 PM
I installed Vance & Hines exhaust, pod filters and re jetted the carbs on my 93 FJ1200 (bike fricken hauls now! ) and now the clutch is slipping. I have dissembled the clutch - the steels and fibers looked good but I went ahead and pulled the complete clutch out of a spare motor I have (long story) and installed it, clutch still slips.
So now I'm thinking about getting the the coil spring pressure plate from Barnett. Should I replace the fiber clutch plates as well or will the aftermarket pressure plate stop the slipping? Both clutch packs looked in good condition.
Any thoughts or ideas will be appreciated.
Thanks
Mark

A Barnett pressure plate should solve your slip problem its a common fault on all FJ's I wouldn't change the plates until you have tried it.

Try doubling up on the stock diaphragm spring first.

+1 for the spring double up, order a clutch spring for a fjr 1300. it's the same spring used in the fj at half the cost.

also since you have extra discs , remove the pack and take out the little one under the wire circlip and replace it with a full size one and leave the clip out.

this topic has been discussed at length and a search will give other ideas.

the fj is tuned correctly when the clutch slips at high rpm gear changes and your oil light comes on. :wacko3:

Hey Marsh and Bill, why don't we create a spot in the files section where we can cut/paste and summarize these recommendations?

Title: Got a slipping clutch?.....Look here.

Randy, can you get a picture w/text on that spring clip which is to be removed and replaced with a fiber disk?

This question comes up often, so having all our knowledge in one spot would help the newcomers..

Great idea.  Yes, it would be a big help to the newcomers. (like me)  I just searched and printed a thread about tachometer trouble yesterday.  Hoping to get to it this weekend if time allows. My neutral light is intermittent also, and there was a trail to follow about that in the thread .  Good stuff.

Thanks for all the Info. I did a search the other day and found the other posts about clutch problems. Hope to find time this weekend to do the clutch mods and add the 2nd spring.

Perfect.  Ideally I'd like a section full of things like that, with a single place to go with links for information on questions like those.

Skip the "what's the best oil" (the wet kind) and the "what's the best tire" (the round kind) questions, and put in the usual salvo that new FJ owners ask:

-second gear pops out
-carb issues (sorted in a less haphazard arrangement than what we have)
-wheel swap possibilities
-shock, suspension mods
-starting issues
-the oil light coming on uphill
-power upgrades
-luggage mounting options
And so on, and etc.  Just to have it all really nicely organized would be made of awesomesauce, and prevent us from having to find old links to things we knew we read someplace but where?!

Really just need a mod with edit rights (or copy the old, paste, modify, and delete the old, sticky the new) rights within a subforum.  And of course the combined knowledge of everyone pitching in.
