Same here. I navigated to the site without the link and searched for the thread.
Try this (http://gl1800riders.com/forums/4-general-mc-message-board/421241-40k-miles-40-days-iba-40x40.html)
Thanks Rick, that worked :good:
So let me see if I get this straight. This guy is going back and forth on I-80 300 miles between SLC and Battle Mountain, Nevada, for 40 days, hoping for 40,000 miles, while riding his living room couch?
I've been on that road. The speed limit is 80mph. If you go 80, you will be run over....meaning, traffic is flowing 90+mph. There is nothing out there. Set the cruise control for 95 and make 1,000 miles in 11 hours, ok make it 12 hours, just because.
Now sleep for 8 hours, that leaves you 4 hours free time in a 24 hour cycle.
What to do? Lube the chain on the Honda? Naaa, that's not it.
There are some brothels along the Nevada stretch of I-80.. so I've heard.
Not my cuppa
That's what I was thinking living room couch. Put him on an fj and see if he lasts more than a couple of days. I think the Midget is the toughest man I've ever met. I left the fall telico rally about the same time as the Midget. To ride back to WI. I had some trouble with my float sticking so I ended up spending the night halfway back.. Got up early the next morning. Bike ran fine. So headed home. The Midget had posted he was home way, before I got home in Wisconsin.
I don't get it. Is it just to get a ribbon?
40,000mi - basically twice around the planet. To think of what you could see and experience. Yet he chooses a 300mi patch of interstate. At least in a real Iron Butt you're actually going somewhere.
Whatever turns his crank I guess. :scratch_one-s_head:
Criticsize the guy all you want, but the bottomline is, that he was riding the distance, and you weren't. You can't take his accomplishment away from him, regardless of your opinions.

You nailed it Paul. What a waste of time, energy and resources. To my mind this has about as much relevance to motorcycling as holding the world record for standing on one leg.
If I was introduced to someone who had just ridden 40k in 40 days up and down the same stretch of flat featureless road 133 times, the look I would give him would not be one of admiration, rather........
This is one of my favourite endurance stunts. 65 days flying a Cessna 172 without landing. They did oil changes, repairs, refueling, all while airborne. These guys just kept flying until the engine wore out and eventually lost so much power it struggled to climb out after a refuel.

WTF?
Criticism and opinion are two different things. If I (and others) are somewhat bewildered as to why someone would do this - akin to stuffing 100 hot dogs down your gullett in 20min - I would think that's just an opinion. Joking about it (see "brothels" below or "hot dogs" above) is just a different way of expressing an opinion. No-ones trying to take anything away from him.
I don't see any particular criticism in these posts. Well, actually there is one. Yours. But then again that's just my opinion. :hi:
BTW - for everyone out there, please don't eat 100 hot dogs in 20 min. It will end very badly. :bad:

Marty, I have a policy of not knocking anyone who rides. My view is that even though I may not like their choice of machine, the way they ride, the roads they choose, the silly clothes they wear and a hundred other things that irk me, at least they're out there doing it, not sitting on couch watching TV and for that they have my respect.
Iron Butt for example is not my thing but (read above comment) at least it's usually point to point and they're having fun, good luck to them.
You say "
you can't take his accomplishment away from him" I'm sorry but I just don't see the "accomplishment". To me, the achievement level is up there with most laps of a Walmart carpark in one day.

True - but we don't have to understand it either!

As I said, completely unimpressive. Midget rides circles around this clown.
Yep Midget is one tough critter.
