Title: Windshield Polishing
Post by: Steve_in_Florida on January 02, 2018, 09:52:29 AM
So there I was...

...dismayed that I had a scratch and some paint on the "tilty"-wing part of my aftermarket windshield.

That happened a while back, when I pulled into an area next to the shop roll-up door, eager to air up the tires. The bike leaned AWAY from me, as I got off, and I had to gently "set-her-down", not so gracefully, against the building.

Broken mirror base, and a paint-mar across the wing of my windshield.

Shit!

Scotch pad removed the paint mark, but left not-so-miniscule scratches in my view.

After consulting with the nice clerk at the auto paint shop, I purchased one of the 3-M headlight restoration kits.

Oh, happy days!

Not only was I able to successfully and completely sand and polish out the mar on THIS windshield, but I also brought a stock windshield that had brake fluid damage (severe cloudiness) back into useful service.

The entire process was pretty easy, just a little time-consuming. The results are fantastic, though.

This feeling of success prompted me to invest in a full bottle of polishing compound, and some additional pieces of 2000, 3000, and 5000 grit sandpaper.

Pretty soon now, all of my plastic windows (MG Midget convertible top), reflectors, and lens covers are going to get the same treatment.

Pat and Noel, I KNOW this is old news to you fellows, but just wanted you to know that I have now joined the ranks of the polishing crew!

Regards,

Steve

For polishing plastic parts you can try toothpaste and for inside of reflectors is great bit of water, dishwasher detergent and use it like shaker for 10min.  :good2:

Good for you Steve!  Simichrome makes a great final polishing paste.

And so begins the obsession......

The Meg's headlight kit has alternative product to most compounds you can try Meg's 105 or 205. Most of the newer compounds will remove 3000 grit use including Menzerna.
