G'day fellas.
I have excellent, comprehensive insurance for just about everything, however my recent escapade has gotten me wondering about the value of it.
I've been told by most of the surgeons, registrars, doctors and nurses that my treatment would be basically the same with or without insurance. The only difference is I get a room to myself (bloody awesome!!!!!), a choice of news papers and some TV with a few movie channels. I will also be moved to a private hospital closer to home in a couple of weeks.
Medically, everything from the variety of ambulance rides, surgery & hardware, transfer back to home town, physio, drugs, imaging etc. are all the same as for someone without insurance.
Given the cost of the private insurance I wonder if it's worth it.
What do you reckon fellas?

Depends what you need doing.
I like the idea of my choice of anaesthetist for
any surgery, my choice of surgeon for an operation where the outcome is highly dependent of the quality of the surgery and my choice of specialist to make the diagnosis. People die every day from their stuff ups.
Troy, what they say is technically true but I'd be surprised if any of them would trust their own well being or life to the public system if circumstances allowed them a choice, and then there's hospital food......
IMO if you can afford it, pay it. If you can't, you still have access to one of the best health care systems in the world for free.

There is a lot to be said about Noel's wisdom on choice of surgeons. There are good mechanics and bad mechanics. The same can be said of surgeons. Every time I was cut on I had already done my research on my surgeons background and qualifications. There are a multitude of orthopedic surgeons happy to cut on you for the money. Pick the one who specializes in the type of surgery you need. I am still walking around with no problems after multiple knee surgeries by surgeons who did college and pro football players knees.
