Title: Starter Drive - Words of Wisdom
Post by: FJ1200W on November 15, 2017, 06:15:54 PM
There is a 1315cc motor in my garage, most of you have seen the pictures, it was built for and ran at Bonneville, and I want to put it back to use.

The builder took the starter drive out of the motor, to save weight, a change I'm sure he may of regretted as he learned a little weight can be a good thing on the salt.

It appears the crankshaft will need to be removed, total tear down in other words.

I don't think I can afford to ship it to Randy, there is one builder here I might trust, and there is always myself -

Thoughts?

This one...?

If so, it looks like the alternator is installed. If the alternator turns, then the starter drive is there.

Is just the starter gear missing?

If so, you might be able to drop the pan and pull the clutch to reinstall that gear.

Is there anything behind the alternator?

I'll check this weekend - I have a box of parts, the starter drive parts were in there, and a small chain.

Now, I'm slightly optimistic - and I can not that you enough for that, even if there is nothing there!

Yep, it is all missing...

So, you are back to square one with a complete engine tear down to put the chain back on the crankshaft.

I wonder why the used the alternator as it is very heavy. They could have used the aluminum alternator block-off plate to save even more weight.

I think I saw a block off in one of the totes. I heard the owner found out he needed the weight on the salt and probably regretted removing the starter.

It did come with a cool gas powered wheel starter, sold it awhile back......

Complete tear down is probably a good idea anyway, verify the shift fork(s) are up to date, etc.

But then again, I'm in serious trouble -

The Kawasaki Z900RS looks almost too good to be true........

It's being introduced on December 1st in New York, at least in the states. I talked to a fellow who rode one last week in California, he works for Kawasaki, everything he said was extremely positive.

And I work for a Kawasaki dealer, not that there will be any real deals to be had........ It would just be oh so easy.......

Greg Watters runs a turbo Bus at the Colorado Mile and other venues.  Last year his bike was still set up for the salt - said it weighed about 900 pounds!
