Title: Recommendations
Post by: ryanschoebel on November 09, 2017, 08:14:00 PM
Hey all, I need new grips for my bike, they are starting to wear, and my throttle one will shift back and forth, given enough pressure. However, i dont want foam (seems to flimsy), and RPMs rubber OEM's are out of stock. I also do really trust what fleabay says will fit.  Do you guys have any recommendations of good, rubber grips, that I can get? Price is always an issue, i cant exactly drop $250 bucks on grips, but I'm willing to spend a bit for some quality ones that will last.

As always, any advice is appreciated!

Ryan

I use the foam grips and love them. Durable and very good grip.

I also use the foam grips from RPM. The grip heaters still work with the foam as well.

How long have you had the foam? It seems like foam would just break down much faster than rubber would, but maybe I'm not picturing the right kind of foam?

Also, how do the foam grips mount? do they simply slide over, or fully replace the existing?

Thanks,

Ryan

They don't last as long as the solid rubber but mine have been on for about 3 years now. They replace the existing grips.

I use these inexpensive grips. they are the 5" version. https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/pro-grip-780-sportbike-race-grips (https://www.revzilla.com/motorcycle/pro-grip-780-sportbike-race-grips) They work exceptionally well.

I am also a firm believer of the added foam covering. Commonly referred too as Grip Puppies, or Pussy Grips. These dense foam sleeves slide over your existing rubber grips. They provide additional vibration dampening, because they are a bit more dense than the 100% foam grips, they tend to last a bit longer. A side effect that is a love it or hate it situation is the grip diameter is increased. With the Pro-Grip 780 grips, the foam sleeves fit very well

Renthal has dual density grips...kevlar something or other.  Don't really think there is actual kevlar in them but they are a soft rubber exterior and hard interior.

One thing I was concerned about was fit. Are all grips generally universal? Or are there specific fits, like any other part?  Sorry, I know, dumb questions!
Thanks,
Ryan

A grip for 7/8" diameter handlebars will fit your FJ. When you buy a set of grips, one (usually) has a slightly larger inner diameter than the other, and that is the one that you install on the throttle side.

Grip length is another thing. They come in various lengths, but usually don't vary by a lot. If your old grips are the correct length, use their length to get the next set, or something close to it. Get a set that have open ends. This is needed, so you can re-install your bar end weights after you install the new grips. Some grips have closed ends, but their ends can be removed with a sharp knife pretty easily.

Revzilla, has many grips, and someone in their Customer Service (they are very helpful and knowledgeable too) can help you.

Foam grips tend to wear out pretty fast.

I put heated grips on my bikes.
