Title: 1984 front fender
Post by: bigbore2 on September 28, 2017, 05:57:45 PM
had to take my front fender off the other day.  Broken tabs, cracked tabs and 50,000 mi finished it off.  I ran thru some water crossing a street from a hose.  The water hit me right in the face. Lol

Can I buy new or is used where to go?
Will an 86 and up fit my bike? -[84-1100]
I just need to get one to use while I decide if I want to repair the other one over the winter.

Hi Big Bore

You can only buy the front half new. RPM did stock, but FJ owners club UK do have them.
This is the one thing they left untouched on all years of the FJ, so yes they are interchangeable. Only the colours changes.

Do you have SS brake lines on the front calipers?

Someone just recently posted he's selling a lot of 1984 thru 1987 stuff, including front fender. http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=17367.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=17367.0)

Usually new SS brakelines will route differently than the stock lines (especially if the calipers have been changed).  The stock lines originally ran through a metal bracket that was located underneath the front fender tabs, between the tab and the fork.

If the PO did not keep this bracket under the tab, or install a like-sized washer, then the stress of tightening the fender without proper support will cause the tabs to crack.

If you repair them, back them up with a washer

For the time being, I am going to use some duct tape theology and get me a tube of Permatex Ultra Black silicone and stick it all together.        UltraBlack sets the stiffest of the ones I have tried.
By the time I really have to do something, I would like to have a new front end on it anyway.
