Title: Oil change big stuff in oil

Today i did a oil and filterchange i filtered the oil and did find 3 bits 2 small and one large about 3-4millimeter in diameter .Dont know what it is ,first i tought it was metal but after washing them and having a closer look it looks like gravel. it has several color like light brown and black and many small edges just like a little rock.
the 2 smaller pieces i could smash with my figers but the big piece is hard i tryed to cut in it with a dremel disk do se if it sparked but it didnt it did not get a metal shine eather. So what is this?? is this a engine rebuild?  I had a strange noise from engine this summer hard to explain but its a sharp metallic thick that comes and goes .Mostly this sound comes when in 1 and 2 gear relising the clutch .Engine runs very good and pulls good idle good. I last changed oil in september last year and did found some small bits also then .
Any toughts ??

Could it be a bit of debris that fell off the bottom of the motor or off the pipes/collector and into your oil catch pan?

When you mention it its absolute possible i was working on a deserted parking and it was very windy today and mayby when laying on my back i have picked op some gravel or small rocks with my arm hoping you are right :yes:

If you're worried about it, when you get a chance, pull the oil pan and remove the screen on the oil pump....take a look.

If you do, have a new oil pan gasket handy.

Time to worry because Just when i was starting to feel sure it was gravel i tested a magnet on it and ....sure it had to be magnetic  :dash2: but its strange it dont look any like metal .Also when tinking more on this i notised some days ago i was riding into kookalao speed zone  i got very heavy vibrations i was thinking i need to rebalace my frontwheel but now im starting to think its engine related.
Thanks Pat for the tip about the pan gasket.Starting to think about pulling out the engine and do a overhaul this winter.

The noise you hear when releasing the clutch in first or second gear would most probably be the starter chain rattling, it's a common noise on these engines with a few miles on them and nothing to worry about

Another thing to consider:
Check your clutch fiber plates for pieces missing. This happens when the oem wire circlip breaks and gets chopped up by the spinning clutch basket and shears off pieces of the fiber.

I started the teardown of the 1100 motor.. I was removing the clutch plates and found the circlip wire strewn throughout the plates and the friction plate next to it looked like this:

there is approx 2" missing from the wire circlip!

hopefully I find the missing chunks of the friction plate and the wireclip without any signs of wear anywhere....not good! :mad:

At least I removed that wire (because of this discussion) from the 86 when the plates were changed recently ! I will be doing preventative maintenance to the others and that wire is going in the garbage!

As with the oil pan, if you open up the clutch cover, have a new gasket handy:

Now things start to get wierd  :wacko1: Today i was at the same parkingspace that i was yesterday to do some brake service and balance my front wheel.
with the stuff i found in the oil i had a closer look at the space i drained the oil in the oil drain bucket.I found various small stones about the same size that the particle i found in the oil.i picked 5 of them with me home no ones look exacly the same as the one i found but one is very similar in colors.
After coming home i tested my pickup magnet on them and yes 2 of the stones are magnetic !! how strange is that? i tought only meteorits was magnetig but clearly not.
one is very magnetic the other looking most what i found in oil is a little magnetic .Crossing my fingers that it is like hooligan mentioned.
Thanks for link to the clutch files Pat i will defenitly have a overhaul on my clutch this winter .
Bones: i know about the starter chain rattle but not sure if the high pitch metallic sound that comes unreguarly is that.Thinking more of bent shift forks or something .

The high pitched sound....does it only happen when the bike is in motion? If the answer to this is yes, then one likely cause is your speedo cable or the speedo itself. There have been plenty of documented cases of this.

Sorry but questions like this pique my curiosity so I did a quick check:

The surface of our planet is rich in terrestrial iron oxides such as magnetiteand hematite (many of which will stick to a magnet), dark black rocks such as basalt, and many different types of man-made metallic by-products such as runoff (slag) from old smelters, and castoff iron implements that have corroded over time ...

From somewhere in here if you need a good snooze. :morning2:

The slag is what caught my eye. Plenty of that around to use as filler mixed with gravel. So keep that in mind when you're on Jeopardy.  (popcorn)

It makes a terrible howl, disconnect the Speedo cable and test (best to do this behind the speedo)

Been out riding today and only heard the knock/tick sound about 3-4 times seems better after the oilchange.Its not the speedo because i had that on my 1100
That sounded like a combination of howling wolfs and my girlfriend in bad temper as she usally is screeming into my ears as she usally do . :music:
Still hoping it was just some stones,but im little worry that it can be a gearbox problem.I had that on my 1100 igored it and one day my backwheel locked up and i crashed
luckely in a nice way.
