Title: Phone Charger
Post by: Yamahahammer1300 on September 03, 2017, 09:09:45 PM
I ran a good quality usb cord up to my phone mount.  I have it plugged into a usb plug made by Battery Tender.  It is hard wired to the battery, but the charging rate is slow to nonexistent.  Is there a better way to do this?

Don't you need some sort of a step down transformer to match the charging voltage on your phone?

I use one of these hardwired to 12v and mounted in my right side panel. Works a treat, and it's got a blue light  :i_am_so_happy:

I have a similar one but it's not the size of 5 gallon drum!

Ran into the same problem. New smartphones need more juice, particularly if using their Map app. Yours is probably charging all right, but not putting out enough current to keep up with demand.

I bought a decent one with a higher current rating. No more problems.

This one. (https://burnsmoto.com/collections/usb-chargers/products/usb-power-socket-charger-weatherproof)

I see, the transformer is built into the Battery Tender plug.....The unit is rated for 2.1 amps so it should pass thru plenty of juice.

Yes, Pat, that's the gig.  I can use tbeir jumper cables, trickle charger, etc.  Thought it was a slick setup, but when I roll, using google maps, it actually loses juice.  Not what I was looking for.

Funny, I ordered that exact charger from Bangood about a week ago, except in Orange... cost less but it'll get here some time next august.

Where did you guys mount your chargers, if you don't mind my asking? Are they 'waterproof' enough to mount out from under the windscreen, say, opposite the choke knob?

Mine is under the seat near the battery.

I drilled a hole in the bottom right of the storage compartment.  It looks like the space is for coins.  A 6 foot charger cord will allow the usb port to be near the battery, and the business end can be stored inside the compartment when not in use.

I have mine hard wired from the battery to the topbox. I drilled 2 tiny holes in the base of it. With 2 joiners so if I don't need the topbox I can remove it. It Has 2 USBs and a cigarette lighter socket. It's got a seperate on off switch under the gear rack so I can on off power when I want. I also run a socket from under the seat to the handlebars. It runs a 2 metre iPhone cable (spare)( incase I decide to mount the phone near the screen)and a charge cable for my sat Nav it to has a seperate on off switch under the rack. 2 cables to the front.  All fused as well.
