Title: Wet Pale Brown paint woes
Post by: aviationfred on September 01, 2017, 11:19:35 PM
The new to me FJ did not come with a lower cowling. IMO the bike just does not look right without one. I have been contemplating a purchase of a new fiber glass reproduction from Pyramid, but other things can be done with the $170.00 price tag. Yesterday, I remembered that I had a road rashed lower cowling squirreled away in my basement that came with the purchase of my 1990 FJ1200. This thing will never be able to be repaired enough to come anywhere close to looking good as new. A bit of ABS cement in a few places and some rough sanding with an orbital and it looked almost presentable.....and...... It would make an awesome candidate to see if I can find a close match for the OEM Yamaha Wet Pale Brown paint that it needs to be. Colorrite, was no help with an OEM paint code match. They only list Yamaha paints for USA spec models. Today I rode the bike up to the local O'Reilly Auto parts store that also has an automotive paint center. They brought out their color matching machine/camera and came up with a paint formula. They came pretty close, except it is a bit too much metallic. Overall, I am extremely please with the paint color match and that the bike has a lower cowling to look normal again.

a
Fred, could you refrain from calling it that. It conjures up images I'd rather not dwell on.

I hope the person that gave that color that name was promptly fired from Yamaha with extreme prejudice....

You're right Fred, the overall design of the FJ just calls out to have that lower scoop fitted. Nice that you were able to complete the look.
