Title: How the heck do you take off the rear fairing on a FJ1200?

89 3CV FJ1200

How much of the rear assembly do I have to disassemble? I had a bolt fall out of the blinker and when I look at the fairing it seems to be held on by two bolts that I can see. But there seems to be more keeping it attached.

I am not sure if you are talking about the main fairing and the question is, what needs to be removed to access the inner area around the instruments, or if you are asking about the tail cowling. Here are three parts breakdown links and I will identify the bolts in question. I would start here first.

The Inner fairing panels.

You may be able to take these off and have access to where the screw fell out without removing the main fairing. The windscreen needs to be removed to have access to #11 in the photo.

The main fairing.

Bolt #15 has 2 per side, you have to remove the air scoop and there is one bolt near the lower aft and lower very forward areas of the cut out for the air scoop. there are 2 Bolt #11's used. Located above the headlight cut out in the recessed holes. Also, the two bolts that hold the headlight on have to be removed. A word of caution, the headlight will then be able to fall out. Secure it with a tie wrap.

Look at this link http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1989/FJ1200W/COWLING+1/parts.html (http://www.partzilla.com/parts/search/Yamaha/Motorcycle/1989/FJ1200W/COWLING+1/parts.html)

The rear cowling is fairly simple. Remove the seat, large side panels and the small rear side panels. There are 4 bolts that bolt the cowling on. Bolts #24 and #32 are what hold the cowling on. don't forget to disconnect the tail light connector, as the tail light is attached to the cowling..

I hope this helps.

There are other ways to remove the main fairing. I personally choose the more involved and more time consuming method.

That does help, thank you.
