I would live a set of these, but I have completely blown the budget a LONG time ago! At least for a bit.

On an FJ, I wouldn't pay the premium for chrome plated carb bodies since they aren't on display.
I'd recommend 36 or 38 mm for a daily rider. I don't care for the mikuni's for a daily rider - the slides tend to "stick" due to the strong vacuum forces from the FJ mill. They never get stuck open per se, but can be difficult to make small throttle movements when needed - like gently rolling on the throttle as you exit a corner.
I really liked the Keihin FCRs I had - lack of a choke was never a problem. They can be challenging to get jetted if you are not familiar with jetting a set of carbs - more adjustments available than most carbs. But very nice street manners when jetted properly and good power too. Problem is cost and availability these days.
@FJ1289, I agree on all... I had Keihins on a GS1000 in my roadrace sidecar rig and LOVED them. Price difference is big between the Mikini and Keihin options, and for me at least... carbs will have to wait.
I think the Mikuni TMR carbs are nicer than the FCR's (which I have on my FJ).
FCR or TMR, either way, roller slides are the answer to the sticky slide/vacuum issue.
The choke feature on the TMR gives them the edge.
I'm still a fan of Constant Velocity carbs for street use (especially touring)
A couple years back I found on UK eBay a set of Mikuni 38mm slingshot CV carbs off the '90-94 GSXR 750 (BST38SS) I've always wanted to try on my 1380. Randy has them and needs to space them out 77-85-77 to fit the FJ's intake.

You are correct Pat....CV are a very good carbs....especially the last of the breed with flatslides. Impossible to "hamfist" them and they are easy tp tune. Very good in the rain secondary to throttle response. Those 38's should work well!
