Title: Rear Brake pedal
Post by: Cass on June 29, 2017, 03:56:57 AM
Just finishing off my 1993 FJ1200. Been sat for ten years before I bought it to rebuild. I have assembled all the rear brakes but when I put the foot pedal on I noticed there was a lot of play between the shaft of the foot pedal and the hole it sits in. Is there a bush that goes in here to pad it out or have I just got a very worn brake pedal and will have to replace the assembly?

Neither, no bushing and they have a bunch of play.

There have been people who have trimmed a section of aluminum beer can and wrapped around the lever to tighten it up.

Cass,

Canned foods usually come in steel cans, and these cans are a good source of decent quality thin steel sheet.
Avoid the corrugated cans, for shop use.
Cut with tin snips, sand smooth to the desired thickness, and apply grease.

Or remove the side plate and take it to a machinist. He will bore the hole oversize (and round) and press in a proper bronze bushing.

Or take it apart. Clean it. Put a liberal amount of grease on the shaft and see what you have afterwards. I'll bet once you're riding it you never even notice the play in the shaft.
