Title: 2007 FZ1 swingarm
Post by: Tor-King on June 12, 2017, 08:29:14 PM
I know others have been successful at modifying the FJ rear with a 2001 FZ1 but I would be curious to know if a later swingarm will work?? I can get a complete 2007 FZ1 swingarm including wheel, axle, caliper, shock, sprocket in perfect condition.  Is it worth the time/effort?  Any ideas?
Thanks,
Dean

It may have been done....I have not seen one.   The overslung bracing may interfere with the subframe.

Hi Dean

Since I own a second gen FZ1 and a 93 FJ I did some comparisons. Based on a number of factors I don't think this swap is easy or practical.

1 The FZ1 arm is 3.5 inches longer measured from the pivot point to the middle of the axle slots. For drag racing this could be beneficial but it would certainly not help agility.
2 The rear sprocket offset measured from the centerline of the rear wheel is one inch further out than the FJ. Moving this in slightly can be done using a 04-06 R1 sprocket carrier and cush drive which will plug into the FZ wheel. This might not be enough. The upper chain guide cannot be moved inboard very much due to the upper brace portion of the left side of the arm. Moving the chain line out far enough using an offset sprocket will most likely cause chain to frame interference.
3 The left side of the arm is a curved boomerang style and is wider than the FJ arm causing a fitment problem with the rear brake mc and most likely the exhaust.
4 I have no idea how adaptable the pivot area of the FZ1 arm is to the FJ frame. I do know that the pivot bolt on the FZ1 is a larger dia. The only way to tell is to compare them off the bike.
5 The Shock linkage and the shock lower mounting point has considerably more offset to the left than the 93 FJ. This and the fact that the length is not the same means fabricating and relocating a new upper mount on the frame. The stock shock on the FZ1 was not a great unit and is non serviceable. many FZ1 owners, including myself, binned it went to an aftermarket unit.

I'm not saying it can't be done but it will require some machining, fabricating and welding. Only you can determine if its worth the effort.

Hi there, Hein!
I believe you answered my question.  Now that you enlightened me of all the potential problems mounting this swingarm, I cannot see it happening.  I know the 2nd gen FZ1 swingarm is different from the 1st gen but I did not know to what degree.  I just thought I would throw it "out there" as I found a complete setup for $200.  It would be a cool setup, though.

Thanks,
Dean

Hi again Dean

$200.00 for that setup is a good deal. If you don't buy it check out if the seller is interested in selling the rear wheel and sprocket carrier and hopefully the rear disc as I would be interested. Having a wheel with fresh rubber ready to install onto my bike certainly interests me. Where in B.C. are you

Hi there, Hein.  I will PM you with the link for the above setup.  I am in Prince George.
