Not sure on Mileage, but slick 50 is a agent that adds some theoretical  "extra protection" to your engine vitals by making things more slippery.
But your clutch would hate you for it in the morning or when you need it to work well.

No second gear issues for me with over 60K on my 86'. It might be due to the clutch slipping at max kookaloo moments preventing/masking  the second gear issue. Time for an FJR spring addition.

most 84-85 and early 86 were replaced at the dealerships, if customer was informed late 86 didn't have a issue new. Most had a better gear and later models have better shift forks also.

the second gear issue can happen to any motorcycle at any time..... all it takes is one careless missed shift to bend the shift fork .... once that happens its a downhill slide to the repair zone.

Kookaloo! ( but take your time on that one /two shift)

When I bought my FJ it had the 2nd gear problem, it had 28000 miles on it. But like Frank says its an operator induced failure. That 15 years ago and I've had no trouble since.

Yes any bike can have issues and yes operater error is mostly the reason why, missed shifts, dropping the bike on the shifter in gear (at speed or not)
It's just that the 84 thru early 86, came from yamaha that way new (bad parts) and the dealer fixed the early ones
