You may be able to find the right exhaust, or patch the damage there. I'd expect the other side to be almost as bad anyway, so you probably need both sides, really. If you can not find any factory units, maybe you should look out for aftermarket mufflers to fit your FJ. If there are no custom-made units for the FJ now, there are generic mufflers that can be adapted to fit. Alternately, you may be able to change to headers (maybe as a 4-into-1 exhaust system). I have Vance & Hines headers with their glass-pack muffler on my 1985. This set-up was by far lighter, cheaper, and faster than the factory units.
WhooWeee. That's nasty.
Problem with welding a patch on that is the metal is thin to start with and the years of exhaust ripping through it makes it even thinner. Translates into almost impossible to weld, even difficult for a good tig welder. Even then, it won't last long.
I think if I were to try and salvage it, I'd "sleeve" the entire muffler from end to front using the areas where the internal "ribs" are welded to the shell to weld the sleeve to the body. There would at least be a decent amount of metal at those points to get a decent weld. You'd also have to stick around the mounting bracket and there might be some issues with the formed areas on the back/bottom (IE: where the axle relief is, centerstand mount, etc) of the muffler.
Even then, it's only going to last so long.....
When I installed some slip on cans I initially had some SS tubing bent up by an exhaust shop for the mid pipe. Worked ok but wasn't quite what I would like it to be. This winter I got some flex pipe and rigged it up again. Haven't had any real time on it yet due to a crappy spring. I have noticed they will flash rust while sitting in the damp under the cover. I will have to keep polishing them on a regular basis until I can get some continuous mileage this spring/summer. It's an inexpensive mod if you can find a decent set of cans on sale.

I might have gone for those Yoshi's if I'd seen them before buying the Kerkers. Those are quite a few more peso's than what I paid though....
I have a complete OEM set that look brand new that came off my 1990. I'm in S.C. though. Not sure about shipping cost.

Timbox, I disassembled my 84, that had the newer all black cans on it, and found that the baffle in my left is broken. I got a good set with my 90 parts bike, so I have an orphaned right muffler if you still want to go that way. I can snap some pictures up close, but it is quite nice, and I will be gentle. Shipped from Sumas WA.
