Title: No tach
Post by: Tapartacus on March 19, 2017, 07:23:14 PM
My tach stopped working on my 92. Do I need a new cable or is there something electronic that went. Speedo works fine.
Thanks
Andrew

No cable for your tach...its electric and the signal comes from your right side coil (#2/3) There is a grey wire which connects your tach to this coil. Check this wire and connection at both ends.

Did you do anything to the bike before the tach quit? Like removing the fairing, etc?

No Pat I have not removed the faring recently. But I did notice a loud crack when attempting to start it! Unnerving to say the least. After a few attempts I got it started and after it warmed up ran just fine. Took it for a ride and then realize no tach.

A loud crack eh? Loss of tach signal....hmmm.. I would look at all your primary side coil wire connections, including the ground wires. Not so much the HT plug wires on the secondary side but the 12v power, signal and ground wires on the primary side of the coils. Scrub clean all those connections.

Just the nature of where the coils reside, they get a lot of road grime blowing in from the front.

is it just the tach that is not working ---- ie -- fuel gauge is ok?

Thanks Pat, a lot of big words used there lol but I'll do some research and have a look.

Thanks
Andrew

Oh and as far as I can tell the fuel gauge is still working. Tank is full and gauge reads full.

This also connects to the ignitor box inside the r-front fairing.  You may want to pull it out (may require fairing removal depending on how dextrous you are) and remove the multi-pin connector and check for oxidation on the pins or in the ignitor .  Clean as best you can and lube with some dielectric grease before plugging back in.

I had an issue in the past with my 92 where the tach read double what it should. Eventually traced it to this.  Haven't had an issue since (2-3yrs now?).

Induction Coils 101: Primary side is the input, Secondary side is the output.

Electrical is the least of my "expertise", so you will have to elaborate a bit further. I was just explaining what eventually worked for me, though I couldn't tell you exactly why it worked. It just did, fortunately.  :scratch_one-s_head:

No worries Paul, good tip on cleaning the connectors at the igniter box.  My primary/secondary comment was for Andrew

No problem.  I never worry anymore.  Ever since they upped the meds.   :wacko3:

Good idea to research this on the web. Something I need to do more of if I'm going to ride this until I drop.  :dance2:  This FJ is going to outlast me I think.
