Sorrowlance,
Lookin' good, there! Welcome to our madness; pull up a chair to the campfire, and be among friends.
As for advice: The FJ is a heavy and powerful machine. You do not want to cheap out on the drive chain. Whatever you get, buy a quality O-ring chain. They last a good long time, so price is not a good way to choose, there. There are alternatives to having a master link in the chain. If the chain that you have now is shot, you might want to take a hard look at those sprockets, front and rear. Badly worn sprockets would be hard on your new chain. Any good bike shops can give you second and third opinions on the condition of the sprockets.
DID ZVMX, Enuma ZZZ, other well known brands (check for model application on their respective web sites). Change the sprockets - that way you will know what you have. Do not use the chain with clip link. Rivet it or buy endless chain if you don't have the tool.
Ring type is not important. My DID is X-ring.

This is not a place to go for cheaper option. Anyway, if you take some care about the new chain I think you can easily get 50-60k kilometers from it (at least from DID).
i am looking at a DID 530 gold with new sprockets from sprocket center. just wanted some opinions be for i spend $
:hi: Welcome to the forum. Great looking FJ you have. The perfect colors.
As for the chain replacement. The previous comments are good advice. The FJ has been known to not do well with cheap/inexpensive chains. Stick to the major name brands, DID, RK, Tsubaki, EK. I use an EK zzz x-ring chain. This chain is currently out of production. The replacement is the ZVX3. I would highly recommend the EK chain and if the sprockets show any wear at all, get new sprockets.

As I did some research, EK 530ZZZ chain has the largest tensile strength on the market, followed by DID 530ZVMX (46.3 kN). I saw here on the forum a lot of guys in the USA use EK. I use DID.
JT 530Z3 (46 kN)
RK 530GXW (44.15 kN).

I know a guy that uses DID 530VX (41 kN) on FJ 1100 without problems, doing 50-60k kilometers on a single chain. Any one else want to give their opinion on this?
Look here for sprockets: RPM (http://www.rpmracingca.com)
I sell the original Yamaha 17T Drive Sprocket (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3A17t) cheaper than anyone else on the planet. There are also other size options available as well; PBI Front Drive Sprocket (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=M%2FC%3AFDS)
I also can supply a wide range of rear sprockets too; Rear Sprocket (http://www.rpmracingca.com/proddetail.asp?prod=RearSprocket)
I do not sell chain as I cannot compete with online vendors. Shop it around, you can find some good deals on chains. As already mentioned the DID ZVMX3 is a great chain. You require 110 links.

Hi Sorrowlance.
I'm in Aurora, and there are a bunch of forum members in the Denver area.
Let me know what you might need help with. I could probably help you with any of it.
If this is the FJ that I just saw recently posted on Craigslist, you got a pretty good deal on it.
Welcome to the forum! :hi:

that's awesome and i appreciate it! a good how to on doing the chain would be sweet and we should go on a ride some time
LOL, I see now that I quoted myself in the earlier post. I don't know how, I thought I was just editing it. Important is that the info is there.
now i see why that guy didn't call me back on the cl add- YOU BOUGHT IT!!!
nice job, nice bike!
be happy to help you with the chain as i have a good rivet tool, but im about 100 miles up the hill form you- might be a bit to ask of the current chain
I have a chain rivet tool as well.
Wouldn't be hard to do.
(I'm not a fan of the clip-type master links on anything powered by an engine)
yeah i bought the tool when i ordered the new chain and sprockets i went with DID
DID is best. I'm a cheap bugger, but I always go with that brand. Paying less could cost you dear.
If I was really clever I would insert the picture of Steves broke rally chain that bust all kinds of casings. Ouch.
FJ is known to destroy the engine casing in most chain breaks. At least according to the photos posted here.
