Title: Anyone else in Oregon? Better read this...
Post by: pdxfj on February 10, 2017, 01:11:44 PM
Give me a 'effing break... So I have a fuel injected vehicle that is over 30 years old and passes emissions testing with flying colors, yet the state wants to subject me to a huge tax because of its age.

If you're in Oregon and even if you don't own a vehicle that is over 20 years old, please reach out to your local representative and politely tell them to piss off.  Hope to hell this one goes down in flames...

List of state reps..

I know classic cars are huge here since we do not have a luxury tax on them like other states.  Not to mention those individuals that drive a 20+ year old vehicle because they cannot afford anything newer.

That will never pass the smell test.... how can you impose a tax like that on people who drive old cars (or motorcycles) because that's all they can afford.  Unbelievable.

Stinkin politicians always trying to think up ways to extort money from the people, even some who put them in office which is usually a dumicrat

Unfortunately (or fortunately) most politicians aren't smart enough to come up with this by themselves.   :scratch_one-s_head:  Behind every act of pending legislation there are lobbyists skulking around the halls of the legilsature, with a duffle bag full of ready-made laws to push through.  A lot of these are now written by firms who specify in writing up legislation for clients and having the politicians just sign off on them.  These clients then benefit from these new laws either monetarily or politically. :diablo:

Question is who would benefit from this?  Are there that many old vehicles on the road that the state would rake in the dough?  Are the tree huggers behind it?  If you have mandatory emission tests then that would take care of any jalopies belching out pollution.  Unfortunately nowhere does it state the raison d'etre  :mail1: behind this new law.  That would require you to call your local representative and say (politely)  "WTF IS THIS?!"  :ireful:

I would think this would be viewed as a punitive tax, and therefore should/would not pass the muster.  But considering governments everywhere are pinching out "revenue tools" as if they came off a 3 day Kraft Dinner binge,  (popcorn) it shouldn't be taken for granted.  Next it would be taxing your old furnace, old windows, etc.  Things people may need but cannot afford to replace.  Then your fucked.  Pay a tax you hate or replace it with something you can't afford - and then pay big taxes on that.

rant over thank you  :bye2:

I saw this the other day, maybe Oregon can spend their new windfall like California wants to http://redalertpolitics.com/2017/02/08/beach-vacations-poor-california-going-off-deep-end/ (http://redalertpolitics.com/2017/02/08/beach-vacations-poor-california-going-off-deep-end/)

We (somehow) defeated a couple of tax measures last year, so this is likely payback for those.  The city of Portland did pass a .10/gallon gas tax to "pay for roads".  I know a number of people with "classic" cars so hopefully they allow the voters to have their say on this one.  But the state has been known to word these things in such a way where no vote by the people is required and they are quickly passed into law.

Anyone here who is informed enough knows our public employee retirement system is over $20 billion in the hole and the majority of these "taxes" get dumped into it.  Sad thing is over 40% of Oregon's population is in PERS.

If you want to get out of California go east.  Stay off the west coast.  Oregon drools over what California does...

Edit: Looks like the proposal has been scrapped, but there is a chance it will come back.

NOPE. I just think the state will loose millions in registration fees. Plus will be bust pulling people over for expired tags. If I cant ride my bikes or drive my trucks, then fuck this place. I don't care anyway. I will drive on expired tags. My Honda Magna hasn't been registered in like 4 years anyway. And I still ride it.
