Title: Sprocket
Post by: vegetta58 on November 23, 2016, 08:35:15 PM
I commute to work on the interstate about 50 miles one way going anywhere from 70 to 100 mph. Thinking about putting the 18 tooth sprocket. Is it worth it. I dont wont to lose the power of the FJ but also dont want to run to high of RPM's all the time. Suggestions. Thanks Mickey

18/38 or 18/37 will still give plenty of low end grunt and slightly better fuel economy. But you will still be looking for 6th gear from time to time.

I am going to start with the rear rim swap with 92 slingshot rim.
Is the rear sprocket a normal suzuki sprocket? Does not have an offset or something.
Same goes for front,it is a normal FJ front.

Is that right?

On my 84Fj went from 17/42 to 18/40. Much happier on the highway with the lower rpm's. Still have plenty of get up and go stop light to stop light. Even with the lower rpm's I am still searching for that elusive six gear at higher speeds.

I run an 18/39 on my '84. I definitely like how it rides with this setup. As others have said one will still look for 6th, just not as often.

I'm fixing to put my order in to RPM. Is the 18/40 the way to go? I know how everybody has their own opinion, I just want to get it right the first time. Thanks Mickey

The 18 will help when looking for 6th gear. The 40 gets you 1 tooth closer to a hard launch. www.gearingcommander.com (http://www.gearingcommander.com)

So 38 sounds like the way to go, right? What size came on the bike originally?

That depends on the year...

Thanks for the link. So mine being a 1990 already has the 40 on the rear. All I need to order is the 18t front, see out it feels then change the rear as needed after riding?

I am on 18/38, it suits my needs. I don't think 18/40 will be that much different. One tooth on the front is about 3 teeth on the rear.

I have ran a 18/38 set for awhile with a '92 GSX-R750 wheel. The FJ has plenty of grunt to absorb the gearing change. With the 1300 engine, I even went with a 19 tooth front for some long distance interstate riding. I would not recommend the 19/38 combo for a 1100/1200 engine for around town riding.

I have been asked to give some more information on my 19 tooth front sprocket. The sprocket that I have is made by PBI. I believe it is a one off, custom order. I found it on eBay. As far as clearance of the chain and the engine case. Here are a couple of photos that show the chain and the clearance to the engine case.
