Title: starter/alternator removal
Post by: bigbore2 on November 18, 2016, 04:03:30 PM
Hey-   I am trying to pull my coil pickup and send it to Randy for testing.  the wire going to the ignitor is routed behind/under the alternator/starter. Can I get alt/starter out to the left side or is it a top down removal approach?
bike is 84-1100.

Left side removal. The wire should be able to be just pulled out from between the alt & starter without removing them though.

Never done this but if I was going to-- I would attach another wire or string to the end before I pulled it out so I could pull it back in the same way for reinstallation.

Just like an electrician...

But, there is a big plastic plug on the end. The wires are just routed between the starter & alt and should pull out from the left.

Yep--electrical thinking. I defer to the gentleman with the mechanical experience.

didn't look like that would work, but I also defer to the expert.

You can test your pick up coils without needing to removing them.
With your multi tester check the ohms at the plug on the ignition box.
Before you do, take a hairdryer and heat the pick up coils up to the test temp specifications.

just grabbed on and pulled, alternator came right out , followed by the starter.  not having removed them before, just wanted to run that by you all.  Thanxxx.

one would think Pat, if I am having running/starting issues the previous 2 moto shops here I took the bike to would have done that to diagnose my problem. But alas, I have had little time on the bike this year because of running issues. Cannot get good advice here in Albuquerque so I will send it to the expert to get the answer.

somehow I cannot get interested in doing electrical diagnosis on my bike. I never understood it in high school, never had an interest in pursuing it.  I always get things diagnosed, car bike and then do the r/r.

OK, there are these little things called electrons and they flow thru the wire,......but you cant see them......Geeez
