I am considering replacing my stock exhaust. I've heard it said that all FJ model years are interchangeable. May need some simple adjustment or support fabricated for rear end support. Is this true? Hard to find manufacturers for these bikes. Vance and Hines are available but heard quality is suspect. Looking at a D&D but not listed for 1986 model year. Watcha think?

After posting I see where I heard the points I noted in a recent post in this very section. So I apologize for being redundant. I've spent so much time reading this forum and other online info, it gets to be a blur. Since my question of interchangeability is answered in that thread, I will modify just to ask for recommendations for exhaust systems for the 86. And is the Vance and Hines brand being fairly maligned? At under $500 it is affordable.

Mike, with them polished headers of yours try to find some slip-ons and keep them shiny parts a little longer. And if you like them...I might go in for a set. :yahoo:

I should have said I am open to that. But again I find it hard to find something listed for our model year. I prefer a shiny can over black. Two reasons I'm considering the change are
1. Although my stock exhaust cans are still in good shape, they can't last forever. I would like to stash them for another day when I'm really fucking old and want that stock look again.
2. To bitchinize the look of the bike a bit. Improving performance is nice too. I not into a real loud bike though. Guess I am already pretty sticking old. :hi:

Assuming the collector is in good condition, all you need are some "middle" pipes to join between the collector outlets and your choice of muffler cans. Any car exhaust shop should be able to make up what you need. Then you can put any slip-on muffler in place you like. In fact, even if your collector is stuffed you can get one of those stainless pieces to replace it. Even going to a full 4 into 1 race system you're not going to get much increase in performance but you will get lots more noise.

i think having a couple of supertrapp slipons on the stock headers would be the ideal way to go.... i've got a supertrapp SS full system and while i do love the power it can be very loud.... i wear ear plugs for me and when passing cars/etc i always do it real fast as not to impart severe hearing loss on them
i know they are expensive but they do sound sweet.....and they are tuneable

just my opinion but the stock system gives the best spread of power up to WFO high speed and that is where the full aftermarket system starts making more power.
i have found that on the street torque and bottom end grunt are more your friend than high speed power
so my thinking is stock system headers and collector with adapters to fit dual supertrapp cans... that way i have all the good stock bottom end grunt but still breath a little better on the big end without being too loud
did i mention they are tuneable?

I realy like the look of the super trap. Any idea which diameter inlet is more better? I estimate the stock inlet at about 1.75 ". Taking a look at my bike it looks like I would need a "middle pipe" to get to the rear foot peg area. My guess is the 19 inch long pipe might be better (over the 16"). Any experience with this?

Read through the Super Trapp site. Think that answered my questions. Your collective input is always valued. Thanks for the tips. Feeling much better and excited about moving ahead with this. The universal cans seem like a cool way to go.

i would buy the shorter can....i think they are more proportional to the lines of the FJ
and probably a little more stable in the hanger because of that.
