Title: Valve stem seals
Post by: slipperysteve on October 24, 2016, 04:24:34 PM
Gday Fellas,

I hope this is in the right place. Just wondering how involved replacing the valve stem seals on my '86 FJ1200 is. I doubt it's a manshed day project. I was thinking Redline at Maroochydore is the place to go. Has anybody had theirs done, and an idea of cost/time?

Cheers

How bad are they? Are you sure its the seals?

After sitting overnight there is smoke that burns away after a minute or so. It doesn't look or smell like fuel. Even so, are there some simple checks I can do to make sure it's not fuel leaking down?

If it doesn't consume much oil otherwise, it's probably the stem seals then. Seen it before.

How many miles/KMs on the bike?

It has 118k klms and had sat in dry storage for a couple of years. I put new o-rings in the carbs, new rubber inlet manifolds, balanced the carbs. I didn't think it was the vacuum petcock as it doesn't display any other symptoms. Goes like a spanked monkey otherwise.

Sounds like my '86, it would smoke at start up then all was good. I just left it till I need major work. Then split the cases and fix the second gear. It is your money and you need to decide if you can live with a short amount of smoke. It can be done with out pulling the head but you will want to drop the engine.

Steve, I assume that you've seen the Files: http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=10862.0 (http://www.fjowners.com/index.php?topic=10862.0)

Normally, you can't go wrong using oem Yamaha parts, however in the case of Valve Stem Seals, there are better parts available than the oem Yamaha valve stem seals.

If you have the bike on the side stand, oil pools to the left side, and if the valve stem seals leak it may be #1 only that is smoking.  Try storing on centre stand and see if it still smokes on start up.  Just my theory.

If it does not use much oil probably ok to leave it alone.
