Title: Hi everyone! I just bought an 93 FJ1200 after a 3 minute test ride!
Post by: MRiver on October 23, 2016, 08:41:47 AM
My first post, glad to be on board folks, howdy to all from Cornwall - UK
I was riding a 1983 Honda Nighthawk for the past 6 months but wanted something with more protection and comfort to ride through the winter on some longer trips. I spied a 1993 FJ1200 online and went to have a look, after a minute on the bike I had to have it. Turned back to the dealer and part exchanged my Nighthawk though don't pick it up for another week.
There is a bit of a judder from the front end when on the brakes, the dealer says it's because the R1 brakes that have just been fitted are not bedded in, but this should not make it judder?
My motorcycle knowledge is limited so excuse any silly questions, I will search on here before posting.
Also I want to change the exhausts and was thinking of the Delkevic 350mm oval, seems to be decent silencer for the money and spied a couple on here already.
It's my first big bike, my last 2 were 600/650, really loving the torque and comfort :)

Cheers Sabre, I see you have a nighthawk or 2 as well, didn't want to sell mine but can only afford to keep one bike, great bikes as well.

Hey dude, pretty new here myself. Welcome aboard the FJ train. I don't believe the brakes should judder. To me that sounds like a possibly warped disc or an ABS issue.

hi there Cobbles, yeah I thought the dealer saying it's the brakes bedding in sounded far fetched, as I don't pick the bike up for another week he said his mechanic will look at it. I know there is a few reasons the front can judder but would not have to sort that myself on a dealer bought bike. Apart from that they really are a beautiful bike to ride and I'm looking forward to some long trips, she comes with all the hard luggage included so good to go  :good2:

Welcome MRiver, yes, trust your instincts.  :good2:
If the rotors were scrubbed clean and a new transfer layer is properly bedded on them (from the R-1 brake pads) and they still judder, then a warped rotor is most often the culprit.

Interesting that all the '93's sold in the USA were ABS models, yet I see no ABS decals (or hardware) on your '93.

Welcome!  Enjoy your ride    Pat

Hi Pat and thanks for the welcome
Yeah I thought, but was not 100% sure, that all bikes from 1993 on were ABS. I asked the dealer but he didn't know, he said it was possibly an early registered 1993 bike so was actually a 1992 model. That is probably the case if as you say, the 1993 models were all ABS.

Looking closely at the pic, the front wheel appears to be the FZR without the large FJ hub that encloses the ABS sensor. I would assume your bike has had the ABS removed and the FZR wheel / Blue Dot upgrade. Hurry up and do the 17" rear wheel upgrade  :)

Oh, and welcome aboard, nice bike!

The seat looks interesting as well. Looks like a modified stock seat have to look at the seat pan

Cheers Zoa and Copper, I hadn't heard about the 17" rear upgrade but now you mention it,,,I want one!!!!
As for the seat Copper, it did seem really low my first ride out, thought it must of been lowered. Does it seem a lot different from stock? Can you raise and lower the seat - via rear shock?

The rear is raised/lowered through the length of the "dog bone" links that connect the shock mount to the swing arm under the bike. Search for discussions about popular lengths, and pitfalls with "adjustable" types. There is a pretty good writeup in the files section for the GSXR 17" rear wheel mod. Very little fuss, and well worth the effort for the tire choices and aesthetics alone.

Ahhh, that helps Zoa, thanks for pointing me in the right direction. After new pipes I'm thinking that 17" wheel is the go!

Welcome!

I am partial to 3xw models myself.  Your has a number of interesting mods:
1) Mufflers....not stock....look good.
2) Belly Pan: looks like is has been trimmed a bit.
3) Reflector up on the scoop.... I expect to meet MOT requirements after front brake mod.
4) Seat: maybe some foam cut out to accommodate a shorter rider?
5)  Brakes: "Blues Spots"
6) Rear end looks a bit high from stock; be interesting to see if the shock is stock?

Looks in very nice shape...congrats!

Jeff

Thanks Jeff

I really appreciate you spotting those things, as I only had test ride before leaving deposit, I don't pick up bike for another week, plus this is the first one I've seen/rode!
I had thought the seat was very low, that explains it, looking at photos of different bikes I can now see the difference.
He did mention the rear shock had been changed - hopefully a worthy improvment
